Exploring Life and Business with Chad Huniu of Fermensch Kombucha

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chad Huniu.

Hi Chad, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Fermensch Kombucha started as a hobby — a hobby that became an experiment, which became an obsession, which became a business. My father Norman and I started Fermensch in 2016 with the goal of making the best tasting kombucha possible. Period.

Coming from a culinary background, I’ve always been inspired by the bounty of tasty organic ingredients California offers. We also have always believed a health-oriented drink can be equally tasty and beneficial. So we created uniquely balanced and delicious flavors you don’t usually find on the shelf. It’s that mission that keeps us motivated and inspired.

Today, Fermensch Kombucha is still a family-run fermentation business. We grew it from a little startup with just a couple of brew tanks in the corner of a commercial kitchen into a full-fledged kombucha brewery in my hometown of Huntington Beach. You can find our tasty booches on tap and in bottles all over Orange County, LA, and now San Diego county!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, of course not. Haha!

There are always challenges and growing pains. We learned so much while scaling our brewing operations from a home kitchen to a commercial kitchen and then into our own brewery. We are simply always learning, refining our craft, and improving wherever we can to make the best tasting booch possible.

Then of course 2020 was a blissful year. A year where I totally didn’t stress out every day or find several gray hairs in my beard or anything. What a challenge the last year was, not only for us, but for all of our wholesale customers, and of course the whole world.

Covid continues to impact everything about business these days. Shipping rates are through the roof, and some items are becoming impossible to source!

But you just have to buckle up, keep your head on straight, and figure it out!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Fermensch Kombucha?
We are known for our unique and flavorful booches. We make everything from crazy toasted palo santo and vanilla-infused strawberry bombs to delicate, easy-going botanical flavors like our best-selling blueberry-lavender-chamomile flavor Bloom.

We put all that love and craft and experience into our booch. You can taste the difference whether you are twisting open a bottle at your local coffee shop or pouring a cup from a Fermensch Kombucha tap at your office (if your office is rad enough to have our booch on tap, of course).

What’s next?
We just got our bottles into all six Erewhon Markets, which is a super big deal for us as our first venture into grocery stores. We plan on expanding into more grocery stores this year, so keep your eyes peeled!
