Meet James Gutierrez III, Garry Rollins Jr., and Craig Jimenez of Boodle Fight San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Gutierrez III, Garry Rollins Jr., and Craig Jimenez.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We ‘The Trio,’ born & raised in the South Bay of San Diego, came together with the hope of uniting the masses using Art, Music, and Cuisine, by creating a fully immersive food experience, and Boodle Fight San Diego was born.

Inspired by the Filipino traditional “Kamayan” style of eating with our hands, and the origin of the slang term birthed out of the desire for Filipinos in the U.S. Navy to bring people of different race, rank, culture, and background to find a common ground to connect over the one thing all humankind can enjoy together – Food.

We hope to break down the social, racial, and all other types of walls that divide us, and invite all people to leave it at the door, along with your shoes 😉 … and come to the table and eat.

Has it been a smooth road?
Colliding three creative minds together, all brilliant in their own right and strong-minded to say the least, was definitely not easy. Thankfully we’ve had amazing people surrounding us since the beginning, not to mention our lovely wives that keep us all grounded, and because of all of their love and support, we’ve been able to enjoy an experience that’s been second to none so far, and are excited to see this journey through.

Each Competition Round so far has come with its own set of unpredictable variables.

We’ve had to take each one with stride & perseverance, and with a little flexibility and adaptation we’ve been able to overcome multiple obstacles and can say each event has resulted in a unique, unforgettable experience, and well worth every bit of hard work.

From last-minute cancellations to venue switches, unexpected expenses, and logistical issues, we’ve had our share of crazy circumstance. None of it ever stops us, because we know that the minute it all comes together and people get the chance to ‘share a plate,’ it all is ultimately a catalyst for connection.

With the hope & possible chance that two strangers are befriended, share a laugh over food & drink, and walk away better than when they came … it will be very hard to convince us to ever have to stop.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Boodle Fight San Diego – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
OUR MISSION: To unite the masses using Art, Music, and Cuisine, by creating a fully immersive food experience. Inspired by the Filipino traditional “Kamayan” style of eating with our hands, Boodle Fight San Diego hopes to break down the social walls that divide us and invites all people to come to the table and eat.

OUR VISION: Boodle Fight San Diego hopes to partner with local organizations, venues, and chefs to create events where patrons activate all the senses using Art, Music, and Cuisine. Each month, all three elements will work together based on the theme of the event, allowing for guests to interact not only with each element but ultimately that these experiences will act as a catalyst to connecting guests with each other.

THE COMPETITION: Every Boodle Fight event will feature two premier chefs, competing for the San Diego title! Each winner will advance to the next round until only one remains to take the championship! Competitors will collaborate on three courses for the evening, ranging between 15 – 20 different dishes: Appetizer, Dinner Feast, and Dessert. However, they will be judged by guests with a blind taste test of each chef’s version of one chosen signature dish of study for each event. Finally, only one winner will be selected by majority vote to advance.

Summer of 2018, we began the first tier of our competition series with the first four chef battles. If you missed it, don’t worry! We are planning to have our semi-final events beginning of 2019, where the first four winners will come together, paired up for their second competition battle, in hopes of winning the chance to compete for the Championship, and earn the title of “Boodle Fight San Diego Champion”!!!

What sets us apart from other Kamayan restaurants, art & music events, and competition shows you may watch on TV … is that we do it all at the same time, and do it well, like no one else has ever done before. We partner with local organizations that do good, to provide a platform for them to gain more awareness and exposure to the masses, in hopes that people will not only see what the heart of our city has to offer, but also that they might be touched and inspired to do the same.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
San Diego has an ever-changing landscape. The people are the most diverse group of transplants & locals that we’ve ever experienced, and yet somehow it all works. Growing up in the South Bay, we were surrounded in a context where the ‘minorities’ were the majority, and your cultural roots played a heavy part of who you were and were to become as an individual.

Only here can you wake up to sunny beaches & great surf, grab a breakfast burrito by brunch, be snowboarding by lunchtime, grab world-famous apple pie and a pint of craft beer by the afternoon, and make it to Mexico for tacos by dinner. You grow-up alongside people that will offer you a meal the first second you’ve ever stepped into their home, but then kick you out if you dare say no.

We have built our lives in this city, struggled every hardship through these streets, and have overcome all of it only by the grace of God. Now, if you asked us if we would do it all again anywhere else? Not a chance. We just want to show everyone else a taste of what San Diego has to offer, though we could never do it justice.
