Meet Jean and Todd Walker of Beach Genie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jean and Todd Walker.

Hi Jean and Todd, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Thanks so much for your interest in Beach Genie!  During the early days of the pandemic, with everything closed down, we were looking for ways to celebrate a birthday. We came to the conclusion that the safest, most beautiful place to be was out on the beach, in the sun and fresh air. We thought about how, when our kids were young, it was so hard to get to the beach with everything you had to bring, but now with the pandemic, people were flocking to the beach. We believed that when local resorts really opened up again, people would want to be on the beach, but wouldn’t travel with beach equipment.

Beach Genie was created to allow locals and visitors alike to experience a luxury beach day or special milestone in a safe, outdoor environment at our beautiful San Diego area beaches. We started out researching who owned the local beaches, which entities would allow permits to operate legally on local beaches, and designing how we wanted our set ups to appear. Several months later, we had our equipment selected, our website built, and our permits in hand. At that point, it was just a matter of getting the word out about our services.

We were blessed to have a lot of local friends who served as “models” for our website, came over to our backyard to give us advice on which curtains looked best on the cabana, and hired us to do bonfires and cabana parties for their special events. Friends put us in touch with friends who got us media coverage. People stopped us while we were setting up events and asked for our business cards, telling their friends about us on social media. We are so grateful for the “word of mouth” advertising, as creating our set ups is very hard, physical work in the sand, but it creates an extraordinary experience.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has NOT been a smooth road at all. Our first permit was on a beach with no adjacent parking. We had to park in a pay lot over a 1/4 mile away from the beach, load up our equipment and walk all the way to that beach to set up, with a second load requiring an extra 15 minutes of set up time just because of the distance we needed to travel to and from the car and the extra loading! The same issue occurred again at clean up.

Equipment took eight weeks to arrive because we chose handcrafted chairs and tables. The permitting process was difficult and time consuming. At some points, we questioned whether or not the permits were ever going to be finalized.

We had expectations on how easy access would be on certain beaches, only to realize that just one or two stairs could wreak havoc on our plans. But, with each obstacle, we learned how best to navigate problems. Our packing, loading and set up times began to decrease dramatically once we started figuring out what worked best, what was necessary and what we could eliminate. Our sons started to be able to unload large parties in a way that made sense for setting up quickly. Once that all fell into place, we became much for confident and willing to try larger events and more elaborate set ups.

And, now our permits include beaches near parking lots and bathroom facilities!

As you know, we’re big fans of Beach Genie. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Beach Genie is a luxury beach experience company, specializing in luxury beach set ups, cabana parties and bonfire services. We provide a sustainable beach day for locals and visitors alike, ensuring that our beaches are left cleaner than when we arrived. Our equipment is made in the U.S. whenever possible, which in turn supports families and small businesses throughout the United States. That commitment is what we are most proud of, as finding equipment made in the U.S. was time consuming, but worth it.

We provide a safe, outdoor environment for families and friends to gather and enjoy each other at our beautiful local beaches. Our unique cabana parties and bonfires are perfect for special occasions, corporate events or a fantastic date night.

We work directly with local restaurants, charcuterie providers and organic s’mores makers to ensure a completely “local” experience. Having lived in North County for 17 years, we know where the best taco shops and pizza places, but we also can provide you with our favorite sushi place or bakery. We also let you know our recommendations for fun things to do in North County and the best experiences for after you leave the beach.

Several things set up apart from others. First, our services are unusual in San Diego, but they are truly unique in that we are legally permitted on seven different beaches in San Diego County, more than any other beach experience company. Next, our equipment is designed for hundreds of uses, as opposed to lower end equipment that is often purchased and then trashed at the end of a vacation after only one or two uses. Our beach toys rentals are actually toys “rescued” from local beaches, where they were likely left behind by people who only used them once or twice and would otherwise ended up either in the trash or ocean. Finally, our bonfire services with State Beach compliant propane fire pits provide a great ambiance, while ensuring that no hot coals or wood is left behind on the beach.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
We love how accessible our beaches are for everyone. We would like to see less trash on our beaches and less abandoned beach equipment and sand toys. Beach Genie is doing our best to ensure a beautiful beach experience for locals and visitors alike.
