Meet Jessica Nicolls and Karyn Frazier of Bungalow 56

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Nicolls and Karyn Frazier.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Karyn and I grew up together in Truckee, CA and started working in the fashion industry in our teenage years. We had always dreamed of opening our own shop one day and after both working in the design industry for a few years, we were able to make that dream a reality. We started Bungalow 56 in the kitchen of my house. I had just had my daughter and we passed fabric samples, floor plans and a baby back and forth for the first year.

We soon realized we were outgrowing the small kitchen office and needed a real office. We moved down the street into a tiny studio space. We managed to fit a small storefront, an even smaller desk area, an office for my husband (who is a general contractor) and a storage room into 400 sqft. Just a quickly as we had outgrown the kitchen office we had outgrown our studio space. We were able to expand into space next door about a year ago and we now have a storefront, office space and a place for all our samples.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I would say our road to where we are now in our business was anything but smooth. We learned so many lessons along the way. At the beginning, you are the secretary, the accountant, the photographer, the marketing manager, the boss and somewhere in there an interior designer and learning to figure out what tasks you can take care of your self and when to hire a professional has been an invaluable lesson.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Bungalow 56 is a full-service Interior Design firm and we also have a Boutique Design Shop in Coronado, CA. On the design side we do new construction, complete remodels, kitchen remodels, bathroom remodels, furnishings and even shelf styling. Our shop has furniture, pillows, throws, candles, jewelry, home decor and much more! We tailor a blend of organic and contemporary design elements to create gorgeously curated spaces.

We are so proud of the business we have built from scratch and how far we have come since the beginning. I think something that sets us apart from other design firms is that we become very involved in our projects and like to design around our client’s lifestyles. We really get to know how they live, entertain, relax and function as a family and then curate our designs to accommodate everything they might need.

What were you like growing up?
Jessica: I grew up in a family of architects so my early life was full of design lessons.

Every family trip included a stop by a museum, antique store or just wandering around looking at houses and buildings. I was very into dancing and even majored in Modern Dance for a year in college. I have always loved space planning and would constantly rearrange my bedroom furniture or go to garage sales to find pieces of furniture to refinish.

Karyn: I grew up watching my Grand Mother makes flower arrangements, prepare amazing food, keep a perfect house all while chasing us Grand Kids. I had two brother’s and a sister and would always decorate their rooms and dress my siblings up. My Grandmother used to say that I was a curious child which I am pretty sure was a nice way of saying I was nosey. I have always had a love for all things beautiful from flowers to interior decor.
