Today we’d like to introduce you to Mayra Navarro.
Mayra, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My name is Mayra Scholz (maiden name Mayra C Navarro, stage name Mayra Navarro Art). I was born on December 17th, 1975 in Mexicali, the capital city of Baja California, Northern Mexico. I have always had a passion for creativity, and in 1988, I told my mother of my interest in painting, and that I wanted to begin taking classes so she enrolled me at Casa de la Cultura in Mexicali. This renowned cultural complex, built-in 1916, offers art instruction, galleries, and performing arts shows. It was here that I took my first classes in oil and acrylic painting.
In 1991, at the age of 15, I moved to the United States with my family and graduated from Imperial High School, CA in 1994. While in High School I participated in several art contests but, in one particular contest, I won 1st place and my logo was featured on television under the Imperial County Office of Education Network based out of Imperial Valley, CA. Since 2012, I have exhibited in numerous annual San Diego events, proudly participating in 71 groups, and 21 Solo exhibitions.
In 2018, I was wed to a great man, a USMC veteran, who has been greatly supportive of my creative efforts.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nothing is easy in this world, and few things are given to us for free. I am fortunate to have a very good full-time job to support myself while I continue to improve my art skills and grow my audience. I am financially conservative and very mindful of how I leverage my finite funds toward my small business. I stay up to date on the events in our community, selecting the best opportunities to secure near or future projects. Something extremely important is that I dedicate time to the practice of painting, and maintaining my website, and my social networks. Obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design has helped me immensely with designing my marketing materials and managing my website.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I dedicate myself to Painting and Graphic Design. When it comes to painting, I create all Abstract-Contemporary original artwork on canvas, paint attractive wall-art patterns with a luxury touch and paint personalized murals to bring harmony for businesses. In the digital world, I design logos, illustrations, business branding materials and websites. This past May, I received the great news that I had been selected as Winner of the 2019 San Diego Award in Graphic Design.
What distinguishes me from others is that I work with my clients according to their budget. I offer free delivery and art installation to all the serious buyers, materials are also included. I enjoy sharing my artistic adventures on Instagram while I paint and listen to music, so many of my followers know me for constantly posting the process of my paintings.
In 2013, ICA Publishing reached out from New York to invite me to become part of their International Contemporary Artists Collection. ICA Publishing is a book that promotes and supports artists and connects them directly with potential buyers, galleries, art consultants, etc., internationally. Through ICA Publishing my paintings appeared in three of their books, Volume VII, IX and X. Sparks Gallery contacted me as well, this beautiful gallery is located in the Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego and they’ve been representing my work since 2015.
I feel very proud as a person of not losing hope of excelling as an artist and for continuing to have the strength to do what I like most. I also thank my friend Debi immensely for having invited me to collaborate with her on our first outdoor mural that is still on display in the city of Encinitas, California. My most recent gallery representation began in Laguna Beach with Laguna Art Gallery, May 2019.
I’m currently on travel in New York City in search of new opportunities to expand more dreams.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
