Meet Natalie Hurray

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Hurray.

Hi Natalie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Art has always been how I express myself, and I always knew I would be in a creative field. I graduated from Point Loma Nazarene University with a degree in Visual Arts with an emphasis in photography. My experience within the art department at Point Loma was transformative and instrumental in shaping my artistic path. My professors and fellow students fostered an environment of creativity that pushed me to explore new artistic techniques and concepts. The act of making art is very therapeutic for me, especially making pieces that relate to my life, often uncovering new perspectives and hidden depths along the way. I also love how art is able to provoke emotions in people that spark conversation and connection with others about a variety of topics, making art such a powerful medium for unity and understanding. When making art for my most recent body of work, ‘333’, I feel like I really found what I want to be making art about. I think that art can be such an amazing tool for creating vulnerability and connection amongst people, and I really want my art to do that for people. 

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Throughout my creative journey, I have been incredibly fortunate to have encountered mentors and fellow artists who have provided unwavering support. As an artist, I have faced the challenge of striking a balance between creating art that authentically reflects my identity and pushing the boundaries of my comfort zone. I deeply believe that in art, it is so important to embrace the discomfort that accompanies growth because it is in that discomfort that you can have some of your best ideas. 

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
While I enjoy exploring various artistic mediums, my passion lies in film photography. My latest project, titled ‘333’, focuses on capturing the human body. Through this body of work, my aim was to showcase the inherent beauty and universality of the human form, transcending the barriers of sexualization and negative self-perception that often plague our society. Instead, I wanted to present a celebration of the body as unique and captivating. ‘333’ stands as my proudest achievement thus far, representing a significant milestone in my artistic journey. It has ignited a desire within me to continue creating art that fosters a sense of connection and empowerment, offering solace to individuals and helping them embrace their true selves with confidence and pride.
