Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophia Desantis.
Hi Sophia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I first learned how food and mindset could affect your body when my husband and I struggled through fertility to have our first son. We struggled for about three years and went through 3 IUI’s, acupuncture, holistic nutrition, surgeries and four rounds of IVF. The combination of working with a holistic nutritionist, changes in my mindset, along with other pieces to the fertility puzzle helped us finally achieve success when pure medical intervention was not working.
A few years later, after we had our second child, my husband began to struggle with some heart issues. His medication for his high blood pressure no longer worked. His new cardiologist suggested he try dietary changes versus increasing medication to help the issue. After only three months, he was able to eliminate both his high blood pressure and cholesterol and no longer takes medication. We work hard to find a balance between nutritious food and a happy mental place because that’s the key to overall wellness.
The process of creating our favorite foods with plant-based ingredients led me to start Veggies Don’t Bite. As a client-centered health coach, meal systems expert and plant-based recipe creator, I focus on helping people feel empowered instead of overwhelmed when it comes to overall health and wellness. I teach that small habits can lead to big changes.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Every road has its bumps, and there have been many along the way. I started this business with a newborn and a one-year-old and have built it along the way with three young children, so I know what it’s like to not only make a health change but also build a business in the midst of chaos! The most recent struggle has been keeping afloat through Covid. Managing my three kids at home, with their school and family life and trying to run my business all at once! We finally see some light at the end of the tunnel!
As you know, we’re big fans of Veggies Don’t Bite. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
Veggies Don’t Bite is a website focused on helping people feel empowered instead of overwhelmed when it comes to overall health and wellness. I teach that small habits can lead to big changes. Through my website and my popular podcast, Real Food Real Conversations, I strive to help people find what works for their personal health and wellness! My philosophy in helping others is built on the following:
✅ Food is only ONE piece of overall health & wellness.
✅ Wellness is not just the absence of disease. It’s a continuum we are constantly moving on.
✅ Change won’t happen until you decide to do it.
✅ Small steps that align with your values will get you to your goals faster than big leaps.
✅ You are the expert in your own life, don’t be afraid to live how you want, even if it’s against the grain.
I am proud that I can show others that health and wellness do not need to be an all-or-nothing approach. You can find balance, eat what you love and not put yourself in a box to reach your wellness goals!
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I hope that we can normalize adding more plants into your life in a balanced way versus taking the all-or-nothing approach. I see people taking more control of their own wellness and finding what works for them as individuals versus following the trends and masses.
