Today we’d like to introduce you to Tada.
Tada, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Konichiwa! (hello in Japanese) Welcome to BPNYC(BoutiquePedal NYC) online select shop for cutting edge musicians/sound creator specialized in Boutique Effect Pedals & Modularsynths. My name is Tada. I’ve been in the music business for a little over 30 years now. Most of those time, I had my career in NYC as a multi-instrumentalist session guy in LES and Brooklyn.
I am originally from Tokyo but moved to NYC at the age of 19, having a dream of being a successful musician/artist, just like any other ambitious youngsters. I wanted to try out at a worldwide level, which wasn’t the case in Tokyo for me. NYC was perfect for that, and it didn’t take me a long time to meet a lot of great musicians, artists & culture.
I always liked the music of all genres (I mean all!). When it comes down to, it’s all about creating a good sound for whatever that project needs, either all by yourself or with your team. You seek what that music needs and work on it. It seems simple but it takes time and effort. You can make bad music with expensive gear, if you are not into it, or you can make great music with literally anything if you do it right. Music is magic. I certainly experienced both sides.
As a musician, I always enjoyed all the equipment I used, ranging from a high-end vintage synthesizer to a half broken guitar. They are your tools and become part of your body. Regarding what you use, you have to have a great relationship with your instruments, just like your life partner or your friends. Then you can create something great, I believe.
I was a busy musician for a long time but found it difficult to keep up that way after becoming a father. I had to turn down a lot of gigs. But I couldn’t work anything but music related. That’s when I started this online business in 2011. I happen to have a good relationship with Electro Harmonix for a long time. So I started selling Guitar pedals first but my desire for musical instruments just won’t stop! Every month I keep adding more stuff and the store isn’t just about guitar pedals anymore. Please ask me any questions about the gear, music, life or whatever! I am here for you! and remember. Keep on Electrifying!!! Tada BPNYC/Boutique Pedal NYC.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It certainly has not been a smooth road but that’s part of everything you do in your life. It is about how you see those things. Life is boring if you don’t enjoy challenging. Business is just a part of your life. You gotta do it. You gotta deal with it.
Some of the struggles are balancing your personal life and business life. You have a partner, kids & friends that you wanna spend time with but you also have to spend time with your business as much as you can. You gotta have time for yourself as well. Keep your mind & body healthy is a key but not necessarily easy. Dealing with the financial side is never easy either. You gotta stay on top of your game but you lose a track here & there. At the end of the day making fewer mistakes is a huge key to your success I believe. We are all trying our best and we all have good qualities within us. I think people make fewer mistakes is a winner!
Tell us about your company. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
My company sells boutique musical instruments, specialized in unique/high end/rare guitar effect pedals & eurorack modular synthesizer. Lately, I am much busier dealing with modular synthesizer than guitar effect pedals. What I am proud of & also sets apart from another musical instrument retails are that I am specialized in originality. You don’t find anything I sell at your local Guitar Center or even other music stores. I only carry cutting edge Manufacturers from small to medium size. It doesn’t matter where they are based at either. I deal with cool manufactures from all over the world, thanks to the internet. I am specialized in experimental music so I am good at supporting musicians/artists who are into uniqueness/originality.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Modular Synthesizer scene is very happening right now. It is a great tool to explore music at different levels I believe. I have been playing guitars, drums, keyboards, samplers, pots & pans and singing but never enjoyed electronic music like this before until I started playing with Modular Synthesizer. I find new possibilities in the music scene with this format. So I have been experimenting with these modules and making more music and also started playing out.
So my plans for the future would be, I want my store to grow bigger along with modular synth music scene.
