Today we’d like to introduce you to Travis Burke.
Travis, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My interest in photography was first sparked while my parents were hiking the Pacific Crest Trail almost 10 years ago. I met them in Yosemite National Park and had decided to buy a Nikon D300 to document as much as I could. Having a camera made me slow down and appreciate the beauty, and really search for ways to capture it. When I got home, I decided to enroll in a few photo classes at a community college, participate in various workshops and listen to guest speakers to start learning the basics and gain all the knowledge I could. From there, I worked for years as an intern and assisted professional photographers in multiple fields to get hands-on experience before slowly taking off on my own.
Has it been a smooth road?
Being a self-employed freelance photographer isn’t always easy. You only see the highlight reel on social media. Behind the scenes, there are a lot of trials and tribulations, from gaps between paid projects to creative burnout, that you have to face to move your business forward. But at the end of the day working for myself as a photographer and athlete are a lifestyle I wouldn’t trade for anything else!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Travis Burke Photography – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I’m an adventure photographer and athlete. Some of my favorite things to shoot are the night sky and underwater scenes in some of the most beautiful places on the planet—many of them in our own backyards. If I’m not behind the lens there’s a good chance I’m doing the sports I love to photograph, like slacklining, freediving, surfing, or paragliding. Years later, I’m still incredibly honored and passionate about being able to pursue my dreams full time.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Growing up in Southern California (with active parents) fostered a sense of adventure in me that I was really lucky to have. With the mountains, desert, and ocean at our fingertips, it’s hard to find anything negative to say about this place!
