Enrique Medina on Fatherhood, Purpose-Driven Leadership, and Building Community Through Hospitality

Since becoming a father, Enrique Medina has approached both life and business with a renewed sense of purpose, bringing greater intention, balance, and long-term vision to his leadership at Crest Cafe. From thoughtful promotions to meaningful community engagement — especially during moments like San Diego Pride — Enrique is focused on creating more than just a dining experience. His goal is to build a space rooted in warmth, inclusivity, and connection, where every guest feels welcomed, valued, and part of something bigger than just a meal.

Enrique, congratulations on becoming a father. How has stepping into that role shifted your perspective on running your business day-to-day?
Thank you so much. Becoming a father has completely changed my perspective, both personally and professionally. It’s made me more intentional with my time, more patient, and more focused on building something lasting. Running Crest Cafe day-to-day now comes with a deeper sense of purpose because I’m not only thinking about today, I’m thinking about the future I’m creating for my family, my team, and the community around us. It’s also reminded me how important balance, leadership, and consistency are, especially in hospitality where people rely on you every day.

With promotions like your Buy One, Get One burger nights, early bird, and late-night specials. How do you design offerings that keep customers coming back while staying true to your brand?
With promotions like our Buy One, Get One burger nights, early bird specials, and late-night offerings, the goal is always to create value while still staying authentic to who we are as a brand. Crest Cafe has always been about comfort, community, and accessibility. We want people to feel like they can come in whether they’re celebrating something, grabbing a late-night meal after work, or just wanting a good meal in a welcoming space. The specials are designed to keep things fun and approachable while maintaining the quality and atmosphere people expect from us.

San Diego Pride is coming up. How are you planning to show up for and engage with the community during such an important event?
San Diego Pride is such an important time for the city and especially for the Hillcrest community. For us, showing up means creating a space where people feel welcomed, celebrated, and connected throughout Pride weekend and beyond. We’re planning to engage through community involvement, special offerings, and simply being present for the people who support us year-round. Pride is not just an event for us — it reflects the spirit of inclusivity and acceptance that we try to embody every day at Crest Cafe.

Balancing family life and business ownership can be demanding. What have you learned so far about managing both without burning out?
Balancing family life and business ownership is definitely a learning process. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned so far is that you can’t pour from an empty cup. There’s always more work to do in this industry, but I’ve realized the importance of trusting my team, setting boundaries when possible, and making time for the people who matter most. I’m still learning every day, but becoming a father has made me more aware of the importance of being present both at home and at work.

Looking ahead, what kind of experience do you want customers to associate with your brand beyond just the food?
Looking ahead, I want people to associate the Crest Cafe brand with more than just good food. I want them to think of warmth, familiarity, and genuine hospitality. I want customers to feel like they’re part of something when they walk through our doors — whether that’s a sense of comfort, community, celebration, or simply feeling accepted exactly as they are. If people leave feeling better than when they arrived, then I think we’ve done our job right.
