Today we’d like to introduce you to Linda Kardoff.
Linda, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I have always wanted to be an artist. When I was 12 years old, I was a finalist in a television art contest and won a $5,000 savings bond. There were no art classes in my elementary nor high school. During summers in high school, I took the train 100 miles a day to study at the American Academy of Art in Chicago. I painted portraits for years. In my twenties, I won a prize of a Windjammer Cruise of the West Indies in a national portrait competition.
I joined the Peace Corps and while living on the coast of Kenya, I volunteered at a home for the disabled, painted murals, and taught middle school art. Drawing was a good way to meet people, asking them to pose, and then giving them the drawing.
When I returned home, there were drastic changes in my life. I continued drawing and went on to take courses in various art forms, including printmaking and sculpture. Depicting the figure was and still is my favorite thing to do.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I love the entire process of oil painting. First, I stretch and prime my canvas and then work on multiple canvas simultaneously. I daydream until I have an image in my mind and then change it until it bears little resemblance to my original concept. I have recently finished a series of paintings of water and no I’m excited to return to the painting of figures. YEA!
In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
I miss the gallery I was affiliated with in Little Italy, (Noel Baza Fine Art). Like many San Diego galleries, it is now gone, but new ones have appeared. Meeting regularly and exhibiting with West Coast Drawing, a very talented group of 25 artists, keeps me active and motivated.
