Today we’d like to introduce you to Meg Ehman.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Thanks to my parents, I had an upbringing with more travel opportunities than most people get in a lifetime. Now, in my mid-twenties, I’ve lived in five countries, visited around 40 countries, and speak four languages. Travel is a huge part of how I got to where I am today. It instilled a relentless curiosity for meeting new people, discovering their passions and has led to the ability to earn the trust and respect of my marketing clients.
After growing up in Germany, New Zealand, and Spain, I graduated from Franklin University in Switzerland with a degree in International Management and Marketing. With 15 years of international travel under my belt, the new adventure was rediscovering the USA. I began my marketing career working for startups in San Diego and San Francisco, where I honed my skills in digital strategy, website design, social media management, video production, and event coordination.
After five years of non-stop grinding, my travel bug was coming out of hibernation, not in the sense that I needed to physically move to a new city, but rather that I needed change, growth, and a little excitement! With a few free hours each week, I started doing freelance web design and, before I knew it, friends and family were referring me to new clients left and right.
Freelancing ignited a fire I had never experienced before and a year later, I’ve scaled to a digital marketing agency. Starting a business comes down to being able to jump head first into the unknown, which I will always attribute to travel.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The year I started my business was the best and worst of my life. I choose not to share too many details out of respect for others involved, but suffice to say trust, communication, and boundaries were broken in a way I never thought possible.
Rather than dwell on it, the message I like to leave people with is that sometimes, the worst things that happen can also lead to the best things. Just remember, “you’ve survived 100% of your worst days,” and more likely than not, it’s made you a stronger and better person.
For all the women starting their journey, here are my five things to work on if you want to build a successful business and live a fulfilled life:
1. Do whatever it takes to build your sense of self-worth, you’ll need it every step of the way.
2. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
3. Create a support network, and be a support for others.
4. Trust your gut.
5. Set boundaries/learn to say no.
What should we know about MWE Creative? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m a digital strategist, website designer and founder of MWE Creative, a digital marketing agency in San Diego.
Clients from a variety of industries hire us to build stunning websites, develop engaging marketing campaigns, and deliver a consistent, cohesive brand message across their digital channels.
I’m really proud of the value our services provide. We go above and beyond to make sure our clients feel listened to. They know that their vision will be executed to the highest standards. There is a level of trust in our relationships that you won’t find in larger agencies.
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
For women who are part of a team, especially in male-dominated industries, I believe it’s still often about being treated as an equal. Women are expected to do more and even put this pressure on themselves, so they end up taking on more tasks and not getting a raise. Men are sometimes better at asking for what they need or delegating tasks to others with less fear of judgment or rejection.
For women who are self-employed, the issue is similar in that they force themselves to “wear all the hats” and are afraid to outsource tasks for fear that the contractor will not do a good job, and that they will not receive the return on investment. It’s all about focusing on your strengths, outsourcing your weaknesses (to an expert you can trust) and investing in personal growth strategies whenever possible.
