Today we’d like to introduce you to Anjelica Wilson.
Anjelica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Oceanside Dance Academy was established in 1989 by my mother, Jocelyn K Wilson. My father was a Marine stationed in Camp Pendelton and who supported her dream by building each one of our dance rooms by hand. What began as a single dance floor has expanded to 8 studios, spanning 3 locations between Oceanside and Temecula. My mother passed away from cancer in 2010, but her legacy lives on through myself, my siblings, our amazing staff and of course… the dancers.
Has it been a smooth road?
Just as any small business, we’ve experienced our own setbacks. Each has served as a learning lesson that have shaped the current business model. Since Oceanside Dance Academy’s foundation is our family, we’ve always had a really strong support system to be there through the tough times. We’ve endured our founder’s passing, a recession, being in a military community with families that are constantly being stationed & deployed, location moves and massive expansion into Temecula in the last few years. I’d say all of these things have made for a bumpy ride, but our staff has remained tight knit and truly a family which has made it all worth it!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Oceanside Dance Academy – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Our dance school teaches dance classes to children beginning at 18-months through adults. Our curriculum is ballet & Jazz based. In addition to offering a wide range of technical disciplines, we have a competition program which travels regionally and nationally. We’ve won numerous dance championship awards; however, the studio is most proud of winning the “Best of Award” in San Diego County for best dance instructors and the “Most Professional Dance School” award multiple years in a row.
I believe what sets us apart from other dance schools is that out of our 23 employees, 18 of them grew up training at the school. There is a joke within our community that “dancers never leave Oceanside Dance Academy.” This is because we have so many students that matriculate through our program, go to college/dance professionally and then eventually come back to become instructors. We have generation after generation of dancers turned instructors. It’s amazing because now we have dancers, turned instructors and parents, who have their children dancing in our program. It really is one big family.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most?
San Diego is hands down the best place to live. The down to earth people, the amazing weather, how eclectic our nationalities are. I am so proud to be from here and to own a 30-year small business here.
My feelings toward Oceanside are even more amplified! I absolutely LOVE Oceanside. This community is my heart! I take such great pride owning a business with the name “Oceanside” in it. The roots here are so deep, the beach is beautiful but humble, the vibe is laid back, and Oceansiders are some of the kindest people I’ve ever known. I’m so proud to teach the children of this city and to be involved with the families in it.
