Helen Liang’s move into a physical retail space marks a thoughtful evolution for North Coastal Floral Design, transforming her brand from primarily event-based work into a more immediate, community-centered experience. By opening a storefront, she’s able to offer customers a closer connection to her designs — inviting them to see, feel, and engage with the flowers in a way that online orders can’t replicate. Inspired by the light, airy aesthetic of North County San Diego, her arrangements balance refinement with natural ease, especially during meaningful occasions like Mother’s Day where intention and emotion guide every detail. As the business grows, Helen remains focused on quality over scale, ensuring each piece reflects the same care, artistry, and personal touch that built her reputation from the start.
Helen, congratulations on the new retail location. What inspired the move into a physical space, and what does it allow you to offer that’s different from before?
Opening a retail space felt like a natural next step as the business grew. While we built a strong foundation through online orders and weddings, having a storefront allows us to create a more personal, in-person experience. Customers can interact with the flowers, see the quality up close, and trust us with more spontaneous, everyday moments—not just events. It also gives us the ability to offer curated grab-and-go arrangements, seasonal designs, and a more immediate connection with the community.
With Mother’s Day coming up, how do you approach designing arrangements that feel both personal and elevated for such a meaningful occasion?
For Mother’s Day, I focus on creating arrangements that feel thoughtful and intentional rather than overly traditional. It starts with color palettes that feel fresh and refined, then layering in texture and movement using seasonal blooms. I want each piece to feel like a gift with meaning—something that feels elevated but still warm and personal, whether it’s soft neutrals or more vibrant garden-inspired designs.
Your work emphasizes a refined, coastal aesthetic. How does the North County San Diego environment influence your floral designs?
North County has a very distinct lightness to it—the ocean, the natural tones, the relaxed but elevated lifestyle. I translate that into florals through airy compositions, softer color palettes, and a balance between structure and movement. There’s an emphasis on designs that feel effortless, almost like they belong in the environment rather than competing with it.
What has been the response so far from the local community, and how are you building relationships with customers in this new location?
The response has been incredibly supportive. We’ve had a mix of new customers discovering us and existing clients coming in to see the space in person. Building relationships is really about consistency and care—remembering preferences, creating a welcoming environment, and being part of everyday moments. We also stay connected through social media and local collaborations, which helps us stay engaged with the community.
Looking ahead, how do you envision growing North Coastal Floral Design while maintaining the quality and intentionality behind each arrangement?
Growth for us is very intentional. It’s less about scaling quickly and more about refining what we do well—continuing to elevate our designs, strengthening our brand, and building a loyal client base. As we grow, maintaining quality comes down to staying hands-on with design, being selective with offerings, and ensuring every arrangement reflects the same level of care and detail we started with.
