Meet Manny Renteria of 1UP Solar in Hillcrest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Manny Renteria.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Manny. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
1UP Solar was born just over two years ago with the dream to create a better solar experience and platform. Having worked as an electrical engineer and in solar for 15 years, I saw how confusing and difficult the process can be. I wanted to develop a platform that made it easier for customers to use and sales representatives to succeed.

Through this goal, we created a platform in which we find all of the possible options for solar plans and then present them to the customer, putting the power back in their hands in an easy to compare format. We want the customer to understand their options and make an educated decision about their solar plan. Ultimately, we have found that this is the most effective and painless way for home and business owners to go solar.

Today, we are quickly expanding from San Diego to Northern CA and from CA to Nevada, Colorado, Arizona and Illinois. We have recently secured many commercial deals and have moved into focusing on non-profits as well. Our team is made up of professionals who have previously worked with other solar companies and share the same vision of a smaller, more attentive and more flexible solar process. Our goal is to make 1UP Solar a household name in renewable energy, curating the best solar plan for every individual or business’ specific needs.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Our road has been fairly consistent; our growth in employees, partnerships and operational regions has more than doubled since our establishment. However, we have struggled along the way to differentiate ourselves from larger, more well-known solar energy companies and in discovering the best marketing and advertising strategies.

Tell us more about your company.
We are a solar agency – which is different from a solar company in many ways. We partner with solar manufacturers and installers to find the best solution for each individual, family or business. Instead of trying to fit every customer into one plan, we present a range of options based on all of our partners. Not all solar plans are created equal just like all solar companies aren’t created equally. Our method works because it is flexible and customizable.

One of the ways that we accomplished this was by maintaining the size of our business. We have expanded since our creation but are still much smaller than your typical solar company. Because of this, we can more effectively communicate with and ensure the needs of each and every customer is met. Deciding to change energy providers and sources is a huge one! With larger companies, it is impossible to receive the attention that you need when you make as big a decision like that.

We also had to quickly learn how to differentiate ourselves in a competitive market across San Diego and CA. Our platform allows us to adapt depending on each individual or organization’s needs. It’s a brand new strategy and platform.

We have taken 15+ years of industry experience, knowledge from multiple companies and providers and our own customer’s feedback to design a model and platform that works better. We are known for delivering a customized approach and having one of the most significant referral programs in the industry!

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck has been a factor in our business by way of helping us meet the right people at the right times. These meetings, friendships and business partnerships have fostered natural and significant growth for our business. We have also been lucky enough to be located in an area of the country that experiences some of the highest rates of energy in the entire country. San Diego’s energy costs are extremely high, even for the state of CA as a whole. This has enabled our argument to switch to solar energy and save money that much easier.
