Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelita Turnbaugh.
Angelita, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I had a traumatic experience in 2017, I fell into a deep depression. Getting out of bed was difficult, human interactions were minimal if it wasn’t for art and my husband I don’t think I would have made it out. I turned to my love of art for help. I discovered a new passion, plants. San Diego opened a new world to me. I started making plant hangers for my home and things for myself or gifts for friends and then friends of friends were interested. I started feeling myself again. My love for life came back, Ang’s Knotty Shop has given me my life back.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I was so comfortable in my bubble that it made it so difficult for me to get the courage to start doing things again. My anxiety held me back for a long time, I had to make the decision to get uncomfortable with myself and life in order to make my dreams come true. My advice would be to get uncomfortable.
what should we know about Ang’s Knotty Shop? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I make macrame anything. I started with mini plant hangers, what we’re known for, then progressed to macrame wall hangings. As of now, we offer keychains, mini standard plant hangers, standard plant hangers, custom work, yoga mat holders, wine holders, and tassels. Recently we started selling plants for locals. I’m proud of the dynamic we have and how involved we all are.
This business saved my life, it’s like my baby. What sets us apart is that I want to do the same for others. I want to help give people a purpose, even if it’s as small as teaching them how to make fancy knots.
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
We’re not taken seriously. If we yell louder, we’re called crazy and if we are quiet, we are weak. This is a new world, everyone else needs to catch up because we are not going to sit at home and wait for anyone, we are leaders now. We are the bosses.
