Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryan and Sean Hill.
In the summer of 1991, their final summer in high school together before Sean went off to college, “The Brothers Hill” had planned three months of friends, sports, travel and fun. On June 8th, their plans came to a halt when Sean received a scary phone call from a family friend that Bryan had been hurt badly during an indoor soccer game and to await another phone call with more details. After what seemed like hours of waiting, Sean finally received a call from their mother stating that Bryan had badly broken his femur and doctors were testing to determine the extent of the injury. It was soon determined that nerves and a major artery were barely missed, but Bryan would require extensive surgery and physical therapy in the hospital for a minimum of one week before he would even be allowed to go home. Sean dropped everything and spent the week in the hospital with Bryan to help him rehabilitate alongside Bryan’s physical therapist. Sean thrived on finding ways to encourage Bryan and guide him just to walk again.
The best part was that it didn’t feel like work for Sean – it was fun! Bryan recognized and felt the same amazing experience from the patient’s perspective. Throughout the week, they solidified themselves as a life-long team who would encourage each other unconditionally. They talked about how fun it would be in the future to provide the same care and encouragement to others as that “team”. During that week together in the hospital, Sean and Bryan realized they had found their calling. They were determined not only to become Physical Therapists but to someday open their own practice together and provide a quality of care for their clients never encountered before. Sean and Bryan wanted to provide not just treatment services, but a global treatment philosophy founded on encouragement, empathy, passion, and giving the very best of themselves to others. With their mother joining them from Arizona to help get started, their dream of a family private practice became a reality exactly twelve years and one day after Bryan’s “life-changing injury”! On June 9th, 2003, they opened Rehab United Sports Medicine and Physical Therapy, Inc.!
Now, almost 17 years later, Rehab United has grown to six locations in San Diego and one in Seattle, Washington, from three employees to over 120 amazing team members!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been a roller-coaster journey filled with the adrenaline of progress and innovation to the challenges of our industry changes, annual insurance reimbursement reductions, competition, and physician-owned practices. Through our company culture, our core values and community outreach, we pride ourselves on our company’s adaptability to combat those challenges and continue to provide the most comprehensive client experience through education, experience, and team approach to client-specific driven results in order to improve function, confidence, knowledge, and independence to become your best “you!”
Please tell us about Rehab United Sports Medicine & Physical Therapy.

Our specialty is the functional approach to evaluation and treatment, manual skills, and strength and conditioning servicing the pediatric to the geriatric populations focusing on causes and not just symptoms. Our practice is committed 100% to functional outpatient rehabilitation, which includes a transitional program to FIT Societe.
Bryan and Sean built RU from the ground up with an emphasis on the principles and foundation of Applied Functional Science. In addition to physical therapy, RU has evolved to include a variety of comprehensive services including Women’s & Men’s Health/Pelvic Pain therapy, vestibular therapy, amputee rehabilitation, FIT Societe functional fitness classes, massage therapy, athletic training management for community athletic events, custom orthotics, AlterG antigravity treadmill training and groundbreaking Blood Flow Restriction customized programming and training for recovery, strength and cardiovascular performance.
We are best know not just for being leaders in Applied Functional Science, but for the unique experience that we provide our clients every single time.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
The perception of good or bad luck depends upon one’s ability to adapt. What has been a constant of Rehab United Culture is that ability to adapt to the challenges to our field (i.e. insurance changes, drop in reimbursement rates, direct access and the impact it had on POPS reappearing, competition, etc.)
For anyone who is unsure about going the route of physical therapy, especially right now with the current circumstances we’re dealing with, what’s the best first step for them to take?
A: Our goal is always to provide our community with guidance on the best route for their care to ensure their optimal recovery. For anyone who is experiencing pain or has an injury, we regularly provide free 15-minute Injury Screens to allow them to be seen by a physical therapist. From there, the therapist would recommend the best route for care, whether it be a full PT evaluation and treatment or for them to go and see a physician or specialist. That said, with the current circumstances surrounding the stay-at-home order and social distancing, an in-person visit may not work (although we are open and providing essential care). As such, we’re excited to share that we’ve recently launched our telehealth services, and we’re offering the same free Discovery Visit for virtual appointments to allow people to still be seen by a physical therapist from the comfort of their homes and get valuable guidance from a therapist. To get started, just simply visit our website and request an appointment.

COVID-19 Conversations:
Covid-19 is affecting so many in our community. It’s a health and economic crisis, but we can come together as a community to share ideas, solutions to problems, and resources to ensure that we all bounce back strong once the virus is defeated.
