Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachelle Hali.
Rachelle, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always had a love for makeup and hair, yet growing up in a small town I didn’t think I could make a full career out of it. It wasn’t until I had moved to San Diego and had my first “on set” experience assisting in makeup, where I knew this was the only thing I could be happy doing for the rest of my life. I then contacted some amazing makeup artists in San Diego and interned for them so I could learn everything I could. Slowly I started to build my knowledge and craft in the commercial/bridal makeup and hair industry. I then went from interning to paid assistants to these artists, to being sent out in place of these artists, to building my own brand with my own clients. I now have my own hair and makeup company with commercial/corporate work, as well as a separate bridal company. It is truly a JOY to go to work each day and do what I love.
Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t always been easy. I did a LOT of free interning on many different sets and shoots to learn the ins and outs of set etiquette, different makeup techniques for each specific job, and beauty vs commercial makeup. It was a lot of hard work and a lot of “putting in the time”. It’s so worth it though. I would challenge everyone to say ‘yes’ to as many opportunities as you can. You never know who you might meet that could help you in the future, or a skill that could be picked up along the way.
Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
I am a freelance makeup and hair artist residing in San Diego and working all over So Cal. I specialize in commercial/corporate makeup and hair as well as all things beauty and bridal. I pride myself on really listening to each client and creating a look WITH them instead of FOR them. Whether I am on a 50 person set or it’s just a one on one job, each one will get 100% of my devotion and time. I really do love bringing out confidence and beauty with each person that sits in my chair.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
I believe that we live in a time where women have more opportunities than ever before, and there are also SO many women helping women, which is incredibly important. I think every woman has a strong voice, but together is when we make change, there is power in the pack. We need to continue to support one another and know that each one of our strengths together makes us unstoppable.
