Today we’d like to introduce you to Jillian Sassone.
Hi Jillian, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
After being in the corporate grind for 15 years, I started Marrow as a passion project. Inspired by the many places I’ve lived, from the stormy Pacific Northwest to the art of New York and the mid-century appeal of Palm Springs, each jewelry design is infused with a little something from my past.
The passing of my grandma Mary was what really set things in motion. What began as reworking the heirloom jewelry she left into new pieces that felt fresh soon grew into a long list of clients who wanted to do the same. Like many passion projects, Marrow snowballed very quickly into a living, breathing company, and in 2017, we hired our first employee and released our first full line.
Soon after, my husband Tim left a successful career to join the team — which I was immensely grateful for. Since then, we have grown the team and outgrown our design studio in Solana Beach. In 2019, we opened our first flagship shop at One Paseo in Del Mar, where I get to continue working closely with clients — the part of the job I’ll always love most. In 2020, we also opened up our second store in Newport Beach, as well as expanded our nationwide trunk show tour, where we pop up in a new city each weekend. While the brand continues to grow, the meaning, sentiment, and reason why I started will always remain.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As any small business owner will tell you, one of the most difficult aspects of starting a company is wearing all of the hats—PR, marketing, ecommerce, sales, operations, accounting, etc. I’m so grateful for my husband’s decision to join the team and help take over certain areas of business management that are his strong suit. We also have been able to grow our staff to help alleviate some of the growing pains as we’ve evolved over the past few years. Thankfully, with the staff additions, I’ve been able to focus more on design and helping growing the brand from a larger perspective.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Marrow specializes in the unexpected. We source stones from all over the world and are constantly working on elevating our designs to create pieces you literally can’t find anywhere else. We’re predominantly known for our stacking rings (both bridal and non-bridal), our engagement ring designs, and our heirloom rework program. Our heirloom rework program allows clients to bring their existing-but-dated heirloom jewelry and rework it into something that’s more modern and perfect for everyday wear.
I’m very proud of the evolution of the brand. When Marrow first started, I was meeting clients in my living room in the evenings after putting my daughters to bed—it was a very “side project” sort of feel. Fast forward five years, and we meet with clients from all over the world every single day.
There are a lot of fine jewelry companies out there, but what sets us apart is our customer service. Every Marrow team member strives to offer the best experience for each client, regardless of if the client is spending $500 or $50,000. We feel honored to have such loyal customers who trust us with their valuable, sentimental pieces, and we try to show that appreciation at every touchpoint we get with the client.
