Meet Lulu LaFortune

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lulu LaFortune.

Hi Lulu, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hello! I started in design originally with the dream of pursuing a career in the fashion industry. I loved sewing my own clothes in High School and learning how to develop a personal style. When I got to college, however, I learned that there was an incredible furniture design program with an amazing woodshop, metal shop, and plastic lab. I had always loved building makeshift furniture as a teenager -a desk made from two filing cabinet and a door, an old bench turned into a day bed- however a room could be arranged and rearranged, I did it. So, when I saw that furniture design was a viable career path I immediately pivoted. To me, furniture goes hand and hand with interior design and textile design. So, while I was at school, I completed two minors in those areas of study.

Once out of school I worked with Kelly Wearstler for a year and half and then James Perse- unfortunately during this career transition the pandemic hit and I was furloughed. While I was very scared of the uncertainty, I was also very excited because for the first time in my life I had this time where I didn’t have a job or school- it was just a blank canvas of opportunity. So, I seized that moment and decided to launch my own collection of furniture and lighting! And now, a year later I have launched a second collection and am so grateful I took the plunge to pursue my dream.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not always been a smooth road! It never is!

Starting a business- especially in a pandemic came with so many challenges! Some I still face today. But we all learn from our mistakes and we keep on trying because you will never learn until you try!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Lulu LaFortune Limited is a brand dedicated to designing your next heirloom. Starting with craftsmanship, each piece is a balance of unique materials, impeccable fabrication, and bold design. All furniture and lighting is designed with the classics in mind and infused with youthful energy, a juxtaposition that allows the pieces to stand out today while also standing the test of time. All products are made in the United States of America.

I am most proud of the use of bold colors and unique materials within the collection I have launched so far. As the pendulum of interior design swings toward maximalism and away from minimalism I am happy to see my furniture be unique and ready for this shift in taste.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
The incredible artists and craftsmen who make the pieces here in LA! It is such a joy to work with each and every person and learn about their incredible craft. I could not have done this without them!

I am so lucky to have incredible friends who also wanted to work together on the launch and start of Lulu LaFortune Limited. Claire O’neill worked with me on copy, Instagram ads, and my website during the launch of each collection. Angie Stong took the incredible editorial photos and the detail product shots of each item in both collections. Cameron Ross works tirelessly to make sure each design is precisely manufacturable.

It takes so many hands and different perspectives to make something happen and I am so thankful for everyone who has helped. Teamwork makes the dream work.
