Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Bartlett.
Hannah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have always been interested in all things beauty but took the traditional path of going to college instead at Arizona State University. I pursued a career in Special Events Management and helped produce some high-end celebrity events in Los Angeles from 2017-2020. Although I enjoyed event production, I always was wondering how my life could have been different if I had stayed true to my passion for the beauty industry. I also felt like I wanted to make a bigger impact on people’s lives. Moving to San Diego during the 2020 pandemic gave me the perspective to see that life is so short and that there is no time to waste. Upon discovering the art of Microblading, I knew this was something I would be passionate about and would give me an outlet for my natural creativity while also utilizing my skills in business operations, marketing, and finance. I decided to take a leap of faith and change careers. I signed myself up for a Microblading certification course in Los Angeles and spent a weekend learning in person from a well-known artist, and then worked the next six months on my technique via online courses to pass my certification. This truly has been the most rewarding journey, and I feel fulfilled knowing that I have the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives by increasing their confidence and improving the way they see themselves.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey has not always been smooth. When starting out, I had set some timelines for myself that ended up being unrealistic due to a few setbacks. Going through approvals with the city to have my studio permitted for work ended up taking much longer than I had anticipated, which was a bit disappointing as I was eager to get started. On a personal level, as someone who doesn’t particularly like to talk about themselves, I have had to learn to talk more about my business with people I cross paths with on a daily basis to get the word out and bring in clientele. The biggest takeaway so far has been to just keep moving forward. At times it can be difficult as a business owner when there is no one to turn to for questions. As cliche as it sounds, you really do just have to have faith in yourself, and ultimately you will be able to overcome any obstacle.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Permanent Makeup Artist specializing in the art of Microblading, a cosmetic tattooing technique performed by a certified technician, where individual hair strokes are applied in the brow area to give the illusion of fuller, more defined eyebrows. I pride myself on collaborating closely with each client on their desired shape, color, and fullness to produce the most natural results possible. Many women choose to get this treatment done to cut down on time getting ready, especially busy moms who are looking to just wake up and go. Others may be looking to fill in sparse areas or darken the overall look of their brows. I am most proud of the close relationships I am able to foster with my clients, for their trust in my talent, and most of all the texts, thank you messages, etc. I have received from my clients telling me how beautiful they feel after their treatment. That is the most rewarding part of my job and what makes everything worth it!
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc.?
I am very big on podcasts and listen to them constantly – driving to and from work, doing errands around town, cleaning the house, etc. When starting my business, I listened a lot to “Pretty Rich Podcast” by Sheila Bella who is a permanent makeup artist. She has some really good tips in her episodes for those just starting out in the industry or those looking to expand their business. Another podcast I am a fan of is “How I Built This” with Guy Raz, which tells the story of how some of the best-known companies were started from the ground up. I remember listening to this in my car, driving to my 9 to 5 job in Los Angeles, wishing I could someday have my own company. Another favorite is “The Skinny Confidential,” which touches on fitness, health, and all things wellness.
