Exploring Life & Business with Meggy McVey of Swim with Meggy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meggy McVey.

Hi Meggy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been swimming since before I can remember. I established Swim with Meggy in Texas when I was 15 years old. The main philosophy to Swim with Meggy is teaching kids to swim in a safe, comfortable, and fun environment. I want to give them the joy I feel when I’m in the water. My goal for my kiddos is to teach them to love swimming and to do it forever. I moved around a lot when I turned 18 and taught swimming in Colorado, Hawaii, and now my permanent home, Southern California! I’ve been in this area since 2017 and have been slowly building my client based. For Swim with Meggy, I am providing at-home swim lessons, so I am going into people’s homes! It requires trust between me and my clients. This is also one of the first things their kiddos will learn from someone who isn’t mom or dad. I want to build connections with all my clients so they feel safe with me. 2022 was my busiest year yet getting to do what I love. I can’t wait for 2023.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was a struggle taking a chance on myself and becoming a small business owner. I always did Swim with Meggy part-time and had other jobs on the side. However, when covid hit and there was no work, I decided to just do it full time and It’s been so amazing. Of course, some days are hard just like any job, but I am so extremely grateful with how far I’ve come just from doing something I love, swimming!

We’ve been impressed with Swim with Meggy, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Swim with Meggy provides in-home or community pool swim instruction for kids and adults, starting at 18 months. There’s no age limit and you’re never too old to learn how to swim.

I have three programs

Learn to swim- Water safety program

Stroke and technique- Learning all the strokes, potentially getting ready for joining a swim team

Lifeguard training- getting kids ready to pass their beach lifeguard tryouts

I personalize each lesson based on the clients’ needs. I am always opened minded to what the parents want for their kids.

I offer one ‘scholarship’ program a year to a client. A highly discounted swim program because I want everyone to learn how to swim!

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I am always networking; I see my clients everywhere! I live in Encinitas, it’s a small town! My clients are amazing to me, they do so much networking for me as well. Word of mouth has been how my business has grown so much!
