Meet Paulina Castro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paulina Castro.

Hi Paulina, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Well, I think that I’m still trying to figure out what my story is. And I say this because I’m still trying to find my path.

I studied graphic design and media arts, and when I was ending that career, I started to have curiosity about housing and designing spaces and took the decision to study architecture. And it has been a journey because besides my two careers, I had different kinds of jobs, like working in editorial design, later having a few months a job on a gallery art, and I have been in architecture and landscape design, and also, I love teaching at universities. But what had always been present is drawing and illustrating as a means to clarify my mind.

So, I can see that I have a lot of subjects that interest me, but I can´t totally say that I have found what my path is. I think that I’m still in that part of my life of experimenting and trying all the things that I put my mind on, and I think that eventually, I’ll work it out.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think I could say that I have had a rough road. I consider myself very lucky because I had a lot of opportunities, especially to fulfill my curiosity to try new areas.

Maybe what I had struggled with the most it’s on measuring my limits about working too much and giving to my passions more part of my life than everything else. And eventually, I understood that what actually makes my performance at work better is to live my life at its fullest by dedicating more time to my friends, my partner, and my dogs. I know that it seems very easy to read, but actually, it took me a lot of mental work to equilibrate that.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an illustrator, that specializes in digital collage. The principal subject of my illustrations is architecture, but I always try to give the greatest importance to the people within the spaces.

I consider that the main theme of architecture is always its habitability. I have never liked images of architecture where the space looks intact and immaculate and there is no real trace of life in the space. I like to represent different types of people living in the spaces and doing different types of activities. The spaces in my illustrations must always represent the trace that someone has been there and time has passed, a mess in the kitchen, objects lying on the floor, and the landscape as natural as possible.

And also, I like a lot to represent in my illustration a feeling on it, I like to think about what the person would feel when someone sees it.
