Today we’d like to introduce you to Giuliana Flores.
Hi Giuliana, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I discovered songwriting at 13. In that time music was my refuge, dealing with puberty, living in violent 2008 Tijuana. My guitar became my best friend, and from there at 22 released my first album, recorded live with 10 original songs. One of them hitting the radio most known as Los Dos Queremos. Music is a career of constant ups and downs, but that same rollercoaster gives you constant challenges that make you grow daily to achieve your best show or song yet. Through my music I’ve been able to get to know so many people, places, perform at some of the best festivals in the region, and who knows where it might lead me in the future, I think I was born to create music that feed human souls and I hope life allows me to do it always.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I think it has always been clear that once I knew I loved songwriting, I was never going to stop, but there were some rough moments where I had to make life choices to fully give music my all. When I was about to release my first album, I was studying for a BA in Marketing at SDSU. I started to get huge opportunities to perform on huge stages in Mexico, but at the same time had to study for finals and my head and heart were not at all in business school mode. I started to get awful grades and although I loved some parts of it, I decided to only finish the associates to fully give in to my music. I remember telling my stats professor and he responded, “Most of your classmates are looking to one day apply their college experience to their passion, and in your case, you are already achieving it.”
To be honest, music is a career of constant challenges, from a technical difficulty on stage to a legal dilemma on a song. I am constantly learning and trying to pour my feelings and thoughts into the music I make with the motive of giving hope to some.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Songwriting and singing. I am constantly working on many song that I’m extremely proud of, but there has been very beautiful moments like singing the National Anthem at Petco Park for a Padres game or at the Consulate in Tijuana. Hitting 200K views on YouTube or placing a song at the radio. Those moments fill you with gratitude, it is a true blessing to give music to the world and see how you touch other people’s heart through art.
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
That every stage or show you’re doing has to be your best. No matter if everything is against you, you never know how you can make a change of heart on someone. Music is a magical medicine, and it truly saves people so, from personal experience, I think even when the odds are not in my favor, I know I need to do everything to make one more song, to sing one more melody that I know someone may or not be waiting but needs to listen.
