Today, we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Taylor.
Hi Ashley, we’re so excited to have you on the platform. Before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Nine years ago, my husband Jerry and I started Taylor Custom Rings with the idea that buying an engagement ring could be a beautiful, personal, hassle-free experience. When we started out, our customers were our family and friends, and to be honest, it still feels that way to a large degree.
We have the best customers in the world, and we feel honored to become a part of so many people’s most special moments. Just a year ago, we opened our first showroom at the Beacon in Carlsbad. It’s been such a beautiful experience to invite our customers into a physical space that represents the love, warmth, and artistic vision we put into our work as designers and creators.
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We bootstrapped our business, so we did everything ourselves for a long time and always had to be very careful of cash flow. There were more late nights and early mornings than I care to remember (there still sometimes are, but thankfully not as many, thanks to our great team!).
We have four children, and they have also gone on this journey with us. That’s meant that the stakes have always been high and that taking risks would affect our whole family. We’ve relied heavily on each other to get through challenging times and keep a vision worth moving forward for.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The mission of our business is “love better,” and we aim to do just that. We help our customers love better by making a better impact with their jewelry purchases.
We offer mine-free diamonds and recycled precious metals so our pieces can be free of the negative impacts of mining. We give our customers personalized attention and offer full custom services, whether custom engagement rings and wedding bands, diamond upgrades, or heirloom remakes. Our customers mean the world to us.
How do you define success?
For me, success can’t be defined by a number or set of numbers. While they can certainly be useful and help us measure our impact, starting and running a business requires so much of your time, energy, and life.
To make it worth it, I say choose something that you can really feel good about. Treat people well, stand for your values, and create something beautiful. You don’t get any of this time back, so make it good.
