Meet Rebecca Lindsay of Rebecca Lindsay Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Lindsay.

Rebecca, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I was 8 years old, my creative counterpart – my dad – constructed a rustic dark room in our Elfin Forest home’s garage and taught me the magic of film photography and developing film onto prints. Fascination with photography is in my blood. I was part of my memories growing up.

In my twenties, a friend asked me to photograph her sons Bris and lent me her film camera. I was terrified (well, it was a Bris – and she was paying me – so I had to nail it). I raced through five rolls of film in a one hour period and was terrified I would damage the film before developing it. That kind of stress was exciting, though, and soon I was accepting a few bucks here and there to capture family portraits and small weddings.

I then became a mom – and not long after, a single mom – and stopped photographing as I was focused on supporting my family, earning a living as a veterinary technician and office manager, just to make ends meet. In my mind, I soul not be both an artist and a provider, so I put my dream on the back burner.

In 2016, I returned to photographing part-time because the pull to be an artist was so strong that it kept me up at night dreaming of how I could make it work. In 2017, while working a very comfortable position at the Chopra Center for Wellbeing, I realized I could not trudge the road to happy destiny If I was spending 40 hours doing anything other than what I was powerfully being called to do. I had to let go of one branch in order to take hold of another – thus, I quit my job at the Chopra Center to be who I was meant to be – a full-time photographer.

My first two months of photographing under my own name was terrifying. I had no backup plan. I was a single mom and there were days where I thought, “Oh my God, what have I done?” My refrigerator was bare. My gas tank was empty. I was afraid of failure that had this fire inside me which said to keep going, don’t give up. this is what you are supposed to do. I spent 80 hours a week pounding the pavement, taking on photography jobs for little money and offering my services to non-profits for the sake of getting my name out there, building a portfolio, and helping some worthy causes. I did not sleep much, and it was frightening, but I held on.

Then one day I received a call from a friend asking if there’s was any way I would be willing to travel to Mexico for a week-long shoot with his boss, renowned motivational speaker and coach, Lisa Nichols of Motivating the Masses, for her “Abundance Now Breakthrough Retreat.” The timing of the shoot was divine – my kids were not with me for that entire week, so I jumped at the opportunity to head to Rancho La Puerta Wellness Ranch in Tecate – and there I experienced the most profound week of my life.

What was supposed to be a work trip turned into my own personal breakthrough experience alongside some of our worlds most compassionate and successful entrepreneurs, coaches, speakers and change makers? What I witnessed and walked through were humans working on their most vulnerable moments in order to transform into a more whole and complete member of society so they could be more effective. It was my first experience with Personal Development – and I was hooked on the positive flow.

I had the honor of photographing and filming their powerful and intimate journey, and at the same time, I was asked to participate in the journey. It was, to put it mildly, pure magic. The pinnacle for me was having this group of 40 stand and applaud my dedication to their authenticity and insist I was worthy of the souls work I was doing: telling a story through my photography.

In Mexico, I left behind my scarcity mentality and started to believe in the work I do – and since that trip, the career shift I have experienced is brick upon brick of magic. I have photographed inventors, actors, authors, physicians, CEO’s, real estate moguls, entrepreneurs and many incredible souls who are making our world better. I still photograph Southern California families and weddings, which I absolutely love and still get emotional when I see a groom kiss a bride.

Since this journey to Mexico, I have entered into a niche of Personal Branding Photography: I create authentic and powerful imagery for businesses, entrepreneurs, coaches, influencers, and the people who are stirring the pot. I travel all over the world to capture people in their element, at retreats and during events. In the next three months, you will find me in Tulum, Dubai, Bali, Mykonos and Costa Rica – and a few more spots in the works. There is not a moment I take this for granted. I am living proof that you can be and artist and support a family!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Early on, there was a span of time when I did not eat for a few days and my phone was shut off because I was late on the bill. I was waiting for a payment from a client, and after paying my rent and electric, and there simply was not enough left in the pantry to feed us all. I chose for my kids and dogs to eat, of course! During the struggle, my ex said to me that it was time to stop dabbling in my hobby and get a real job, which only ignited my fire more. My dad had said to me when I was younger, “an empty belly is a great motivator.” He was right!

I kept photographing – every single day – and created content on Instagram and Facebook, which increased my following – and brought more business my way. I hope always remember the dry days and have a healthy appreciation for the struggle.

Rebecca Lindsay Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My business is Rebecca Lindsay Photography – and I specialize in Personal Branding, Events and Lifestyle photography. A majority of my clients are entrepreneurs, coaches, business people, celebrities, and influencers. I am known for capturing authentic, honest and polished portfolios for my clients to use in their marketing content. I also create videography which is a blend of emotional and professional storytelling.

I connect with people – whether my client is famous or just starting off, I find a way to know them personally so when we work together what we create is real and powerful truth – I hear my clients vision and create imagery to match. I am a real, loving and compassionate person – I feel a lot when I am photographing people. Their story impacts how I photograph them. I put in far more than is asked because my clients are elevating our world.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
When I log onto Facebook and see hundreds of profile photographs I have captured, my heart swells! I remember each moment with the people in those images.

Like many of us, I would love the dream house (for me, it’s in the woods and has a stream running through the property), and enough savings to not sweat the small stuff, put my kids through school and jet of too fun places with the man in my life. However success these days is more than my bank account. It’s knowing I have made a difference for many of the people I photograph – and helped them to elevate their business or brand, so they can keep making a difference. Ripple effect, so to say.

I have a few famous “marker” individuals I would love to have in front of my lens” Jason Mraz (he is a local changemaker in my town of Fallbrook), Paul Simon (I listened to him in the dark room with my dad), and Tony Robbins (because he is the king of the coaching world and my clients have loved working with him). Dreams? Maybe. But I can see it happening!
