Today we’d like to introduce you to Damian Roman
Hi Damian, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey began with music. From a young age, I was captivated by the way music could transform a space and evoke deep emotions. I spent countless hours playing instruments, composing, and immersing myself in producing music. Music was more than just a hobby; it was a language that allowed me to express myself and the world around me. As I traveled looking to perform, I became exposed to different cultures, cities and its histories, and social contexts were created.
These travels opened my eyes to the broader world of architecture, design, and urban planning. I started noticing how spaces, whether a bustling concert hall, a quiet café, or a vibrant city square, played a critical role in shaping human experience. Music had led me on a journey of exploration, and with every city, I found myself more intrigued by how history, economics, social structures, and culture all intertwined to shape the built environment. This is where my interests began to merge.
I became fascinated by the ways in which architecture and urban planning reflect a society’s values, struggles, and aspirations. How the design of neighborhoods, the layout of cities, and the quality of housing impact people’s lives and opportunities. How the spaces we inhabit can influence the social dynamics of a community. Music taught me skills in which I begaun to transfer into questioning what architecture is.
By the time I reached the crossroads of my career, I realized that architecture was not just an academic pursuit, it was the perfect confluence of all my passions. I could bring together my love of music, my fascination with history, city planning, social economics, culture, and my growing interest in how spaces could foster community, creativity, and conjoin. I pursued studies in architecture, immersing myself in the field, though my path did not necessarily follow the traditional route. I pursued architecture with this broader perspective, eager to understand how the built environment could influence not only individual lives but entire societies.
Today, as a residential designer, I see each project as a chance to weave together these interests: to create homes that are not only functional and beautiful but that also resonate with the deep cultural, social, and historical currents that shape them. My goal is always to design spaces that connect with people on a personal level, that tell stories, and that consider the social and economic contexts in which they exist. I believe that architecture, much like music, has the power to shape and elevate human experience, and it is this belief that drives my work every day.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth road, but each challenge has shaped who I am today. One of the biggest hurdles was financial. It was not feasible for me to complete my formal education in architecture due to the high costs, and I had to make the difficult decision to step away from the traditional, from education to work experience. That decision, while tough at the time, it led me to alternative paths.
Another challenge I faced was the traditional expectations of the industry. Most firms require a degree as a prerequisite for interviews or potential job opportunities. This created a barrier for me as I tried to navigate a field where credentials often hold more weight than experience. But rather than letting that limit me, I took it as an opportunity to explore other avenues. I built my own business, where I could apply my previous learned skills, creativity, and the knowledge I began to acquire through experience.
While it was not easy, these struggles never held me back. In fact, they pushed me to think outside the box and find my own path. Starting my own business allowed me to create a space where my passion for design, history, and the built environment could thrive, free from the constraints of traditional expectations. Today, I look back on those challenges with gratitude, as they’ve made my journey even more rewarding and authentic to who I am as a designer.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was immersed in a vibrant world where the raw energy of post-punk music met the adrenaline of fast cars, inspired in part by the Fast and Furious franchise. My youth was a blend of artistic exploration and hands on mechanics. i learned not only how to play and read music, but I also worked on cars, developing a keen sense for both rhythm and precision. This unique fusion of interests shaped my personality into one that is both creative and driven, always eager to push boundaries while appreciating the art of craftsmanship in every detail.
