Brian Victor’s Stories, Lessons & Insights

Brian Victor shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning Brian, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I enjoy listening to music and going to concerts. Listening to new music and listening to live music is exhilarating. I love the creativity involved in making music.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Brian A. Victor, a San Diego family law attorney, mediator, and law professor. I founded the Law Offices of Brian A. Victor, where I help clients navigate divorce and child custody cases with both legal expertise and empathy. My background as a licensed marriage and family therapist and former Family Court Services mediator gives me a unique understanding of the emotional and practical sides of family law. I also host the Divorce and Child Custody Discussion podcast, where I share insights to help parents and professionals better prepare for the challenges of family court.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
A moment that really shaped how I see the world was my time working as a Family Court Services mediator. Sitting across from parents in some of the most emotional moments of their lives taught me how complex people’s stories can be and how important it is to truly listen. It changed the way I view conflict, empathy, and resilience and it reinforced my belief that even in difficult circumstances, understanding and preparation can lead to better outcomes for everyone involved.

Do you remember a time someone truly listened to you?
Yes, I remember early in my legal career when a mentor took the time to really listen as I talked through a challenging custody case. Instead of immediately offering solutions, they asked questions that helped me think more deeply about the client’s situation and my approach. That experience reminded me how powerful it is to feel heard and it’s something I carry into my work today with clients, students, and colleagues. Truly listening can change how someone feels and often leads to better results.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would probably say that what really matters to me is helping people, whether that’s guiding clients through one of the most difficult times in their lives, mentoring students who are just starting their legal careers, or simply being someone others can rely on. They know I care deeply about doing things with integrity, making a positive impact, and always striving to be better both personally and professionally.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
I understand deeply that in family law, there are rarely true “winners.” Most people see divorce or custody cases as battles to be won, but I’ve learned that real success comes from finding solutions that reduce conflict and help families move forward in healthier ways. When emotions run high, it’s easy to lose sight of the long-term impact decisions have on children and relationships. Understanding that balance between legal strategy and human compassion is something I’ve come to value deeply.
