Today we’d like to introduce you to Caitlin Thill.
Caitlin, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always had an interest in homes, not just the houses themselves, but the memories created inside them and how families grow within those spaces. That’s what ignited my passion for real estate. I love helping people find a home, not just a property.
I began my career as an independent agent in San Diego in 2018. I was new to the city at the time and spent many weekends hosting open houses across different neighborhoods. It was one of the best ways to get to know San Diego and the people who live here, and I quickly learned that every neighborhood has its own unique character and community.
In 2019, I joined the O’Byrne Team, which was one of the best decisions for my professional and personal growth. I started as a Field Director, working closely with clients, vendors, and agents while helping prepare homes for market and guiding transactions through closing.
In early 2020, my business partner and I teamed up to help manage the surge of buyers that came with the real estate boom during COVID. Our work quickly expanded to include sellers, investors, and renovation projects. Over time, I’ve been fortunate to work across many facets of the market, from helping families find the right home to helping clients build real estate portfolios for their future.
Since starting in 2018, I’ve sold over $100 million in real estate across San Diego County. Today I’m also raising two kids of my own, and getting to experience the San Diego lifestyle through their eyes has been incredibly special. It truly feels like a dream to raise a family here and makes helping other families find their place in this community even more meaningful.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of persistence and being willing to pivot. Early on there were times when I felt like I was banging my head against the wall trying the same approaches over and over. Eventually I realized that if something isn’t working, continuing to repeat it isn’t persistence, it’s a sign that it’s time to adjust.
Working with a business coach helped me shift my mindset. I learned that pivoting doesn’t mean giving up, it simply means finding a better or more authentic approach that works for you. Not every strategy works for every person, and part of growing in this business has been figuring out what aligns best with my own strengths and style.
Another challenge has been learning how to balance work and life. There’s a common misconception that real estate agents make their own schedules. While that’s true in some ways, the reality is that we also work around our clients’ schedules, which often means evenings, weekends, and being readily available. With so much access through our phones, it can be difficult to truly disconnect.
Over time I’ve learned the importance of setting boundaries and creating balance, especially now that I have a family. It’s an ongoing process, but one that has helped me build a sustainable career while still being present at home.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I work with buyers, sellers, and investors across San Diego, and one thing I’m most proud of is the level of hands-on service my team and I provide throughout the process. A real estate transaction involves a lot more than just buying or selling a home, and we take pride in helping manage the many details behind the scenes.
In many ways we end up wearing multiple hats. When preparing a home for the market, we often step into a role similar to a general contractor, coordinating vendors, repairs, landscaping, staging, and everything needed to make the property show its best. On the buyer side, especially during escrow, we help coordinate inspections, specialists, and any work needed before closing.
We’ve built strong relationships with trusted vendors throughout San Diego, which allows us to handle much of the heavy lifting for our clients. Our goal is to make the process as smooth as possible so our clients can focus on the exciting part of real estate, which is moving into the next chapter of their lives.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was very focused on school, friends, and Irish dancing. It was competitive and I traveled internationally for competitions, including competing at the World Irish Dancing Championships and traveling to Ireland. It was an incredible experience at a young age and taught me discipline, dedication, and how to perform under pressure.
At the same time, I’ve always been a very people-oriented person. I loved being surrounded by friends and family and was never someone who enjoyed being on my own for long. I’ve always thrived in environments where I’m collaborating with others, building relationships, and working toward something together.
Looking back, a lot of those traits still show up in my career today. Real estate is a very relationship-driven business, and the competitive side of it reminds me a bit of my dancing days. Both require preparation, persistence, and the ability to show up and perform when it counts.
