Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristina Weekes-Thomas.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My start in photography is pretty funny. I played basketball throughout middle and high school I was really good for someone who is 5’2, 5’3 on a good day! But sadly, I played hard and broke a lot of bones. One day in middle school my mom gifted me with a little red camcorder from radio shack. I took it with me to games while I was benched and would go home and make small fun videos of my team with the footage. Since then I was hooked! Jump to my college career I went to Palomar shooting for Roob who is the host of NotSoSerious Radio which was my first time shooting with all creative freedom and I grew as a photographer there. After my time at Palomar I transferred to CSULB and I started shooting concerts throughout San Diego. I still shoot concerts but I am now pivoting towards commercial and editorial work! Which is new but so exciting!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely has not been a completely smooth road. Along the way I have faced challenges like growing a team, building confidence in my work, and navigating opportunities that didn’t always come easily. There were many moments of doubt, times when I had to work hard without recognition, and situations where I had to keep pushing even when things felt uncertain. But those struggles taught me resilience, patience, and how to stay committed to my vision and to this day I am still learning. They shaped not only my work, but also who I have become in the process of it all.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a photographer who specializes in editorial, portrait, and storytelling-driven work. A lot of what I do is centered around capturing feeling, atmosphere, and identity in a way that feels both intentional and honest. I’m especially drawn to work that feels cinematic and real, whether that’s through portraits or concept driven shoots.
What I’m most proud of is the way I’ve continued to build my voice and style while staying committed to growth. I take a lot of pride in creating images that feel thoughtful, visually strong, and alive. I’m also proud of how I’ve been able to keep pushing forward, refining my work, and creating opportunities for myself in a competitive space.
What sets me apart is my eye for storytelling and emotion. I care deeply about making work that doesn’t just look good, but actually feels like something. I think my perspective, culture, and ability to blend softness, honesty, and editorial intention into my work gives it a distinct voice.
How do you think about luck?
The only way I can describe luck to me is a quote from Denzel Washington “I say luck is when an opportunity meets preparation”
So everyday I am preparing to meet my next opportunity!
