Meet Kim Nguyen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Nguyen.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I have always been a creative person. Even as a child, I liked to draw still life on whiteboards, using fruit baskets as inspiration.

Despite my love for art and painting, I didn’t pursue anything in the creative field as a career, at first. I earned a marketing degree at SDSU and focused on my career growth in the digital marketing.

Finally, one day I realized that I hadn’t picked up a paintbrush in over 7 years! I resolved that I would never forget my creative side again and started an Instagram account in May 2016 to keep myself accountable with my work. It was just for fun at first, but after receiving an overwhelming amount of support from friends, family and the creative community, I decided to create the brand Kimposed and work in a more professional sense.

I quit my full-time job as a digital marketer in May of 2017 to focus on Kimposed and haven’t looked back!

Please tell us about your art.
I create watercolor illustrations, which occasionally incorporates hand lettering and calligraphy. I create work that is normally very bright, sometimes sassy and oftentimes nostalgic. If my work give you a smile or giggle, I’ve done my job. The subjects of my illustrations are constantly changing however and I’m still exploring my voice as an artist and testing new techniques.

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
Whether you’re an artist or not, being self-employed will come with financial ups and downs. I highly recommend planning and saving accordingly. I also find that once you get involved with the community and connect with other creatives/artists/entrepreneurs, the work will come. The more face-time you put with people, the more likely they’ll think of you for an upcoming project or refer you to their network for friends.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
You can find me at local San Diego craft markets or comic conventions, but the easiest way to support my work is online at Kimposed.com!
