Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Kelly.
Megan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Today, I own Sterling Photo which is a photography business specializing in real estate and commercial photography. I photography homes all over San Diego County for realtors and other commercial business properties. I have enjoyed photography all of my life. I first learned how to use a film camera in middle school and high school as well. Over time as digital photography started to become popular I started learning my way around that aw well. I graduated high school and went off to get a Bachelors degree in Sociology at Cal State San Marcos.
During this time I continued to take photography classes because my passion was very much alive for taking photos. After I graduated college I realized that I wanted to further my education in photography and learn new techniques and skills. I started attending UCSD’s photography program for digital photography. I absolutely fell in love with architectural photography! After focusing on this particular aspect realized this is my true passion. I asked myself, ” who needs this? is this a business idea?”
These questions led me to SCORE, a local business education group in San Diego where I could learn more about the basics of business. A month later I got my business license and started marking myself at real estate caravans, Facebook and Instagram.Now two years later I have a company that I love doing what I love. Every day I get the opportunity to help clients sell their homes and practice my skills in photography.
Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, there was a time about 6 months in that I was unsure if this business was going to be able to thrive and compete against other businesses. Started doubting if I had made the right decision. I have an amazing family and support system and they told me to keep going. I adjusted my marketing and kept going. It was a rough time but it was well worth the self-doubt and uncertainty
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Sterling Photo story. Tell us more about the business.
I take pictures of mainly homes and commercial properties. Through my style and technique, I make them look amazing as to bring in potential buyers for my clients. My business is special because what I do is unique to my artistic viewpoint and creativity. I have a style and perspective that other companies can’t offer. I do all my own photos and all the editing afterward.
As a company, I have been featured in dream homes magazine and work closely doing photos for San Diego Real Producers Magazine. I have an amazing following on social media that is incredibly supportive and fuels my passion. Most importantly I have fun, if I’m not having fun and excited about each property I do, then I wouldn’t be able to continue progressing and creating. Real estate Photography is its own muse and I love every second of it
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
If anything I see more virtual reality type technology. There are infinite ways this could take shape, I just hope I am always passionate about continuing my education in photography to be as cutting edge and up to date.
