Check Out Andy Acosta’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andy Acosta.

Hi Andy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today. 
A first-generation American to Cuban parents, I grew up in Miami, FL, where Spanish was my first language, and singing seemed to be my second. I was the youngest of three and was fortunate enough to have a middle school teacher that offered me free voice lessons. A retired opera singer himself, I was in good hands at an early age. I was always a curious and multi-hyphenate kid. I played baseball, volleyball, gymnastics, studied voice, piano, guitar, saxophone, and loved math and science. I was stubborn and fought hard for what I wanted. And the obscure and unfamiliar world of opera was a challenge I always wanted to figure out. I felt no fear when I performed. I felt compelled to tell stories. And time stood still in the most beautiful way when I was in front of an audience. It was as if every second mattered and had meaning. I was fortunate enough to win a TV show called Minuto de Fama around age 15 and then later returned to the Allstars season of the show Aqui Todos Ganan. I later went on to earn my Bachelors of Music at Florida State University and Masters of Music at Indiana University. My career took off immediately after where I debuted with the San Francisco Opera and Minnesota Opera Resident Artist programs and then went on to appear on the roster of the Metropolitan Opera, Seattle Opera, Houston Grand Opera, San Diego Opera, Atlanta Opera, and many other US debuts. I made my international debut with the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari as Tony in West Side Story. And I am best known for my role as Timothy Laughlin in Gregory Spears’ Fellow Travelers. 

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It would be unfair for me to talk about my career as an artist without acknowledging how singing empowered me to come out and be openly queer. To challenge myself and those around me. And how it led me to meet my incredible husband, Josh Owens. And how we were led to SoCal through all of our travel for my work. San Diego immediately felt like home when we first visited. Now, almost four years later, we find ourselves a San Diego family with our Golden Retriever. And I balance my travel for performing with another passion – Real estate. 

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Real Estate agent with Compass. I am part of Todd Armstrong’s team in Mission Hills but represent clients in San Diego, Los Angeles, and Palm Springs. I am most proud of my ability to help clients of all types: from first-time homebuyers to clients investing in the hotel and multifamily space. My performance background has granted me a greater attention to detail and ability to communicate that sets me apart from other agents. 

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I’ve learned how important community is to me. And how engaging with my community is one of my core values. I didn’t realize the true value of connection with others until it was taken away during the pandemic. I am fortunate to work in two professions that are all about connection, community, and the human experience.
