Today we’d like to introduce you to Veronyka Rivera.
Veronyka, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my career at 17 as a licensed cosmetologist, which honestly felt less like a career choice and more like following something I was already wired for. Color was always the thing. I went on to become a color educator, working with globally recognized brands like Wella, Sebastian, and Phyto Haircare, which deepened my understanding of color science in ways that most artists never get access to.
What I didn’t expect was how much that foundation would eventually transform the way I approach permanent makeup. I began the transition in 2016 and leaned in full time in 2019, and that’s when everything changed. I wasn’t just doing brows and lips. I was bringing nearly two decades of color theory, skin chemistry knowledge, and an academic science background into a field that, frankly, doesn’t always prioritize those things from a practioners standpoint.
DermaLUX was born that same year, and in 2024 we opened our flagship studio in Rancho Mirage inside the Rancho Mirage Medical Center. Today I work alongside my partner Michael, who specializes exclusively in scalp micropigmentation and scar restoration, and together we’ve built something that feels genuinely unlike anything else in the Coachella Valley.
The work that means the most to me goes beyond aesthetics. It’s the client who stops hiding after years of hair loss. The woman who reclaims 30 minutes of her morning and uses it instead for something that actually fills her up. That’s the real magic for me.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Is there such a thing as a smooth road? When I really want something, my plans have plans. I really wanted DermaLUX.
Every business has its share of struggles, delays, and hard days. But if I’m honest, the real ongoing challenge hasn’t been any single obstacle. It’s been building something sustainable. A business that genuinely serves our clients and is here for them while also working around our lives and our needs as human beings so we can have a live we love in the process. Finding and protecting that equilibrium is the work that never really stops. It’s not glamorous, or flashy, but it’s the thing that determines whether or not you’re still standing ten years from now.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
DermaLUX is a permanent makeup and skin repigmentation clinic, but color science is really the thread that runs through everything we do. We specialize in precision brow design, lip enhancement, scar camouflage, and paramedical repigmentation, and my partner Michael specializes exclusively in scalp micropigmentation and scar restoration. Together we offer a combination of artistry and technical depth that feels genuinely different from what most studios bring to the table.
What we’re probably best known for, and what I’m most proud of, is a proprietary 18-season color analysis system I developed specifically for permanent makeup. It goes well beyond the traditional 4-season model most people are familiar with, using digital color analysis technology to identify the precise pigment tones that will actually harmonize with a client’s unique coloring, skin chemistry, and environment. I have a science background, and color has always been my love language. This system is where those two things live together.
In a field where a lot of artists develop a good eye, we built a methodology. That’s the difference. It means our clients aren’t getting a best guess. They’re getting work that is scientifically matched to them specifically, designed to look like it simply belongs on their face.
That level of precision comes from nearly three decades in professional color theory, international education, and close to a decade now in permanent makeup. When you spend that long following the thing you love most, it tends to show up in the work.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
It’s okay to ask for help. That sounds simple, but it took me longer than it should have to actually live it.
The life of an entrepreneur can be an isolating one, and I am naturally a “I can do it myself” person. For a long time I wore that as a badge of honor. What I didn’t see was how much it was slowing me down. Charging ahead alone felt like strength, but it was actually just stubbornness with good intentions.
Once I got better at asking for help when I needed it, everything started moving faster. DermaLUX moves faster. I move faster. It turns out the things you can build with the right people around you look a lot different than the things you can build alone. I wish I had learned that sooner, but I’m grateful I learned it at all.
