Hi Ahmed, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My passion for science began early, steering me toward formal studies in microbiology and public health. Over a 20-year career in environmental health, I worked as a Senior Laboratory Analyst and earned essential certifications—including becoming a Certified California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Lead Inspector/Assessor. This experience taught me that every detail counts; the way a sample is collected can significantly affect the accuracy of its analysis. Recognizing that reliable results start in the field, I founded Socal Testing to merge rigorous lab expertise with certified, hands-on field inspections, ensuring every test meets the highest standards.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey to establishing Socal Testing was anything but smooth. Transitioning from a secure laboratory role to entrepreneurship in a high-cost market like San Diego involved balancing part-time work, personal sacrifices, and the pursuit of additional certifications such as the Certified California Occupational Safety & Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) Asbestos Consultant.
Mastering the nuances of proper sample collection while managing financial pressures was challenging. Every hurdle—from rigorous certification studies to navigating the complexities of fieldwork—reinforced my belief that attention to every detail is crucial for delivering dependable and precise testing results.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
As a first-generation immigrant, my path has been shaped by both opportunity and perseverance. My late father deserves the first mention. During my undergraduate years, he was my greatest supporter. His encouragement and sacrifices laid the foundation for my education. Even though he is no longer with me, his belief in my potential continues to drive me.

My journey to the United States began with hard work. I supported myself while pursuing my Master of Public Health, balancing academics and work without external financial help. That experience taught me resilience, determination, and the value of grit. Throughout it all, my mother has been a quiet but powerful force. Her consistent words of encouragement—“I know you can do this”—helped me through the toughest days. Her faith in me has been a steady anchor.

I’m also thankful for Professor Dr. Richard Gersberg at San Diego State University. His guidance and support throughout my graduate studies played a huge role in my academic and professional development. He challenged me to think critically and always encouraged excellence. I’m proud to be an #Aztec4Life.

And I can’t leave out Mr. Mike Anderson, my field training supervisor. It was very hands-on work, and he had a calm, practical way of teaching. He showed me how things were done, gave me space to learn, and stepped in when I needed it. That kind of trust helped me get comfortable and gain confidence during the training.
