Conversations with Briana Walker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Briana Walker.

Hi Briana, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey in photography began in 2016 when I purchased my first camera, a Canon SL1, and started exploring landscape photography. Over time, I gained the confidence to begin photographing people, starting with my best friend while he DJ-ed in 2017.

A turning point came during a rooftop event at the Hard Rock Hotel in downtown San Diego. After the show, I was having a drink with my friend Scotty, who had invited me to model for a bikini designer he was photographing. While chatting with another model about San Diego Comic-Con, I mentioned my interest in attending to take photos. That conversation sparked my first serious commitment to capturing high-quality images. We attended Comic-Con, and I went dressed as Spider-Man, camera in hand—channeling my inner Peter Parker.

Not long afterward, I became pregnant with my son, Jameson, and relocated to Okinawa, Japan, due to military orders. Living in Okinawa provided me with a stunning natural backdrop everywhere I went, and I was determined to make the most of it. I began offering free photography sessions and completed around 30 before I started charging for my work.

During my time in Okinawa, I built relationships with local modeling agencies, both modeling and photographing talent for them. This experience allowed me to expand my skill set, covering everything from newborn photography to editorial-style shoots. My work has since been published in both genres.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey began smoothly, but everything changed when we moved across the world to Okinawa, Japan. As a new mother in a foreign country where I didn’t speak the language, I found myself needing to rebuild not only my personal support system but also my photography community from the ground up. Determined to adapt and grow, I quickly obtained a driver’s license, purchased my own car, and began offering free photography sessions to connect with others and refine my skills. Around this time, I also upgraded my gear for the first time, investing in the Canon R6—marking a significant step forward in my professional development.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a multi-internationally published photographer and memory collector. I specialize in portrait and editorial photography, but I also have a deep love for capturing weddings and adventure sessions. What I’m most proud of is the wide range of photographic styles I’ve learned over the years and the incredible people I’ve had the privilege to photograph—sharing and preserving their most meaningful moments.

What truly sets me apart is the global community I’ve been fortunate to learn from. I’ve had the honor of being mentored by talented photographers around the world, each of whom has helped shape my perspective and refine my craft.

How do you think about luck?
Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to experience more good luck than bad—but I believe that luck and hard work go hand in hand. Opportunities have come my way, but it’s been dedication, consistency, and passion that have allowed me to make the most of them.
