Conversations with Sumana Soonthorn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sumana Soonthorn

Hi Sumana, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello I am Sumana Soonthorn AKA Sue, Founder of Siam Bodyworks. Before I became a massage therapist I was a civil engineer by trade in Thailand working on projects internationally. Which I was rewarded with plenty of satisfaction and lessons learned in constructing, designing, and overseeing the creation of bridges and tunnels.

I have been solo backpacking and visited many country because I like to see and learn different culture. I like adventure and streaming activity such as height altitude hiking, paramotoring, etc. When I arrived in the states I decided not to continue the path of engineering because I was looking for something more, freedom and purpose. That’s when I found Andaman Institute of Massage where I became certified as a Massage Therapist in the state of California 2019. From there I worked with many respected and skilled therapists I met along the way to hon and develop the skills required to craft our version of Thai massage. I will be honest, I was not a skilled therapist out of the gate. It took a lot of time and patience from both clients and my seniors with countless hours of practice to develop both the skills and confidence. So then, it was time to embark on my new journey of creating Siam Bodyworks. Our goals are simple to build a brand that our therapists, and myself could be proud of being a part of known for the quality and knowledge of our craft.

Massage is a give and take experience. Therapists learn over time to identify clients’ pain, uncomfortability, or a reluctance in receiving a massage. Some sessions can be a silent battle to gain the trust of the recipient through confident and intentional techniques. This battle may stems PTSD or other past trauma and massage being such an intimate process between people and allowing your body and mind to surrender too your therapist may be too much for some. Achieving this level of trust is where true recovery, healing and at times an excess of emotional weight may be released. Becoming a massage therapist taught me the importance and balance in giving and receiving. Keeping a straightforward approach to improving our massage skills and development of ourselves in many aspects of the body, mind and spirit. It has been a valuable and memorable experience.

Challenge is always trying to staying humble and having patience knowing that you can learn from everyone with every interaction. There are lessons every where if we are will to be open to that point of view.
Not being afraid to fail, continual self-pioneering remembering its based off the unknown to push the boundaries of the one’s self experience and knowledge to find the good and bad, the right and the wrong decision for improvement for a more satisfying and fulfilled life.
