Hidden Gems: Meet Steve Peterson of School of Rock

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Peterson

Hi Steve, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been a life long lover of hard rock music and have been playing guitar and bass since I was about 13 years old. After a long career in technology I was ready for a big change and decided to get back to doing what I love. Rock music. As it turns out my own children were at the age where they could really be a big part of this journey with me and they have become excellent musicians themselves. In fact, my oldest just performed live at the 2025 NAMM convention where she played on stage with bass great Victor Wooten and British phenom Jacob Collier. I opened 2 school of rock locations in Del Mar and Scripps Ranch. I then purchased the school of rock in Encinitas. Owning three schools has kept me very busy and I’ve been able to meet thousands of families and been able to be a part of their musical journeys which has been extremely rewarding to say the least. We’ve had some immensely talented and equally wonderful students come through our program and I’m very confident that our staff and our program really helped accelerate their progress in their musical journey.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a new business is alway a demanding pursuit. Ramping up a new business in the thick of Covid 19 was its own major challenge. For the 1st 9 months we were open we were teaching lessons outside much to the displeasure of our neighbors. Trying to run group rehearsals in the time of masks, COVID testing, vaccinations and overall general fear of COVID transmission made life particularly difficult. Overall it significantly slowed our overall progress to ramping our program by a couple years.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about School of Rock?
We specialize in performance based music education. We teach kids music by putting them in rock bands and teaching them how to achieve great levels of musicianship and rockstar confidence.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Students reaching levels of performance mastery and self confidence that they never expected to have.
