Hidden Gems: Meet Travis Gramberg of Koheid Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Travis Gramberg.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Koheid was created during a period of turmoil for myself and my wife and was honestly a leap of faith. We both had family members with medical issues that required us to help care for them outside the constraints of a typical 9-5, so I quit my job and took on the role of caregiver while creating the company during my free time. The first couple of years were bootstrapped, and we took any job we could get while I completed my Landscape Architect licensure. As we became more established, we were able to start getting a more steady flow of bigger jobs and bring on an intern and eventually employees.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I’m not sure any business owner would call the entrepreneurial journey a “smooth road,” even if everything is going relatively well. While everything has evolved pretty naturally, we have definitely encountered challenges throughout the way. Creating a better work product and client experience, adjusting to fluctuating workflows, creating synergies and best practices, and effectively marketing to our ideal clients have all been a work in progress as we continue to gain more experience. Also, the time lapse between completing a set of plans and then being able to photograph the final project is a frustrating but inherent part of our work. Some of our best work has yet to be seen by potential clients, which is both exciting and disappointing.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Koheid Design is a boutique landscape architecture firm focused on marrying art, ecology, and landscape architecture to create sustainable environments and exceed client expectations. As a licensed firm, we design everything from public spaces to private residential landscapes, which is quite a large range of clients. High-end residential is currently the majority of the work we do and thrive when we can collaborate with architects and interior designers to create a very unique space for ground-up development. We are known for thoughtful, innovative, and custom designs that are both environmentally friendly and create value for the end user. Koheid approaches each project with fresh eyes and develops solutions based on the space, the intention for the space, and the clients.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
I’m pretty old-fashioned and would consider my pocket-sized Leuchtturm notebook as my best resource for all things in my life. Some favorite books and publications include Braiding Sweetgrass, The Secret Life of Trees, Birds, and Blooms, and Bob Perry’s books.
