Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Jaime Allen of Escondido

We recently had the chance to connect with Jaime Allen and have shared our conversation below.

Jaime, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
What brings me joy (outside of work)?
Fostering cats is my heart’s happy place. Whether it’s helping tiny kittens discover the world or giving a shy rescue the safety to trust again, each foster is a reminder that love and compassion can change a life, sometimes in just a few weeks.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Meet Jaime – Shades of Spirit & The Rescue & Rise Sanctuary
I’m Jaime, a professional psychic medium, Reiki Master Teacher, and paranormal investigator with over 30 years of experience working with spirits. Through my business, Shades of Spirit, I offer intuitive readings, Reiki healing, and spiritual education to help people navigate life’s challenges, connect with loved ones in spirit, and discover their intuitive gifts.
I also started The Rescue & Rise Sanctuary, where my passion for animal rescue meets energy work. I foster cats, offer Reiki for animals, and provide compassionate end-of-life support for both pets and their people. My work is deeply rooted in creating a safe space for healing, whether it’s for a person in emotional pain, an animal in need of comfort, or a community seeking hope.
In addition, I am a practitioner at The Prism & Pendulum, a metaphysical shop in Escondido, CA, where I’ve developed a variety of workshops and circles including our Queer Spirituality Circles, dedicated to creating inclusive, affirming spaces for members of the LGBTQ+ community to explore their spirituality, connect with their divine self, and find community.
What makes my approach unique is how I blend the mystical with the practical: spiritual connection, energy healing, and intuitive guidance are interwoven with compassion, grounded wisdom, and a genuine love for helping others rise from hardship.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
Who saw you clearly before you saw yourself?
My children, each of them in their way, have seen me more clearly than I ever saw myself. From the moment they arrived, they’ve looked at me without the filters of judgment or expectation, seeing my heart and my truth even in moments when I couldn’t. They notice the way I move through the world, a bit different than most, the way I care for others, and the way my energy shifts before I ever speak a word.
Each of my kids has reflected back a different part of who I am: my strength (oldest), my sensitivity(middle), my resilience (my third), and my magic (all three). Through their eyes, I’ve learned to embrace pieces of myself I once ignored or doubted. They’ve reminded me that my intuition, my compassion, and my capacity to heal are not only gifts, they are part of my identity.
In many ways, they’ve been my greatest teachers, holding up a mirror that shows me not just the mother they love, but the woman I truly am. Their unconditional love and ability to see the real me have shaped not only how I parent, but how I live, love, and serve others every day.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
What did suffering teach you?
Last year tested me in ways I could never have prepared for. Within months, I faced two major knee replacement surgeries and the devastating loss of my mother. Each on its own would have been enough to tear me down and dismantle the version of myself I thought was unshakable.
Suffering taught me that healing, whether physical or emotional, requires patience, vulnerability, and the willingness to ask for help. My knee surgeries forced me to slow down and surrender, something I’ve never been good at. It taught me to honor my body’s pace and to measure progress in small, steady victories. Losing my mother tore open my heart in a way that no spiritual training could shield me from. But in the depths of that grief, I learned that love never leaves, it changes form, and it becomes a guide, a whisper, a presence that walks beside you.
These experiences stripped away the illusion of control and reminded me that resilience isn’t about never breaking, it’s about allowing yourself to break and trusting you can rebuild. They deepened my empathy, reshaped my priorities, and made me even more committed to creating spaces for others to heal, because I now understand in my bones how precious and fragile life truly is.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
What is a belief or project I am committed to?
I am deeply committed to my foster program with The Ark of San Juan, an animal rescue group dedicated to saving cats and kittens from euthanasia and unsafe situations. Opening my home to fosters, whether it’s pregnant cats, bottle babies, or shy rescues, has become a calling. I work with The Ark of San Juan Capistrano to ensure every cat receives medical care, love, and a safe place to heal before finding their forever home. For me, it’s not just about saving lives, it’s about restoring trust, nurturing resilience, and making sure these animals know they are cherished.
I also pour this same belief in compassion and safe space into my work at The Prism & Pendulum, where I’ve created inclusive gatherings like the Queer Spirituality Circles. These circles offer members of the LGBTQ+ community a supportive and affirming environment to explore their spirituality, embrace their divine selves, and build connections without fear of judgment.
My mission, whether through animal rescue, community circles, or spiritual healing, is to help those who feel unseen to be seen, valued, and loved. Healing and compassion should never be conditional, and I am committed to making sure both are given freely where they’re needed most.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If immortality were real, what would you build?
If immortality were real, what would I build?
If I had forever, I would build a sanctuary, a living, breathing space where both humans and animals could heal side by side. It would be a place where someone grieving could sit in a garden surrounded by the purrs of rescued cats, where someone seeking spiritual guidance could walk into a circle of unconditional acceptance, and where no one, human or animal, would ever feel unseen or unwanted.
This sanctuary would weave together everything I love: animal rescue and rehabilitation, inclusive spiritual communities like my Queer Spirituality Circles, and holistic healing through energy work, nature, and connection. There would be rooms for quiet reflection, spaces for ceremony and celebration, and open land where rescued animals could roam freely and safely.
My vision wouldn’t just be about creating a safe space for the living; it would also honor those we’ve loved and lost, keeping their stories alive through shared memory, art, and spiritual connection. Even with immortality, my mission would stay the same: to leave a lasting imprint of compassion, healing, and belonging that could ripple outward for generations.
