Today we’d like to introduce you to Bethany Endo.
Hi Bethany, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My photography journey started in 2012 and it all began in a yearbook class! I absolutely fell in love with the concept of being able to tell a person’s story and bringing out the beauty of each and every individual. My camera was constantly with me and I was so eager to learn all I could about the ins and outs of photography. To gain experience, I offered free photoshoots to anyone who would take the time and spent countless hours practicing.
I began doing paid shoots in 2018 and never looked back! Since starting Naturebybeth Photography, I have had the privilege to work as a Photographer for PLNU’s Marketing and Creative Services team, Social Media Coordinator for Lifesong CC & SNP Centers, Editor-in-Chief and Head Photography Editor of Rooted Magazine (MOSAIC) and Head Photography Editor of The Mariner (PLNU). I have continued to take photos throughout the completion of my B.A. in International Studies and Masters in Public Health.
I am so thankful for the encouragement I’ve had along this journey, whether it be from mentors, family or friends. I had always intended for photography to be a side thing but due to the immense support of so many, Naturebybeth Photography has grown into something far more beautiful than I could’ve ever imagined.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not always been a smooth road! It is interesting balancing doing what you love and also having it as a profession. There were many times along the way, and still times now, where I doubted my skills and the feasibility of having photography as a career. In a profession that is filled with incredible talent and creativity, it can be easy to feel the weight of imposter syndrome. There are many moments where I considered quitting photography altogether but the aspect that brought me back each time was the love of photography and how it connects us all.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I absolutely love creative shoots and getting to do portrait work. Most of my clients actually come to me for graduation photos though! At the moment, I currently offer portraits, couples, graduation, and family photos.
One of the works I have been most proud of is having my photography featured in Rooted Magazine, a publication that seeks to amplify the voices of those who are commonly overlooked. Getting to know the inspiring individuals featured in this magazine is something I will cherish forever.
I’d say one aspect that sets me apart from others is how I strive to make my photoshoots a fun and comfortable space. My favorite part of photoshoots is showing clients their pictures as we go, so they can see what amazing models they are! I love the many friendships that have developed from photoshoots with my clients and how I have been able to walk through life with them. I have taken pictures for clients from their high school graduations to their baby showers, and so many other milestones between.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice to those who are just starting out is to do as many photoshoots as you can! The biggest way to improve your skills is to practice over and over and over until it becomes natural. If you love photography and have a passion for it, I encourage you to stick with it and soak in all you can.
One thing I wish I had known starting out was that it is okay to admit you need help or that you don’t know things. There is such an amazing and supportive photography community available and willing to offer advice, if you are open to taking it.
