Meet Christopher Burroughs of Garden 31 Community Intiative

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Burroughs.

Hi Christopher, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started Garden 31 based on my own life experiences and the environments I moved through. I grew up with access to nature, space, and fresh food, but later experienced living in areas with very little green space, resources, or opportunity. That contrast made me think about how environment shapes people’s outcomes. After spending time incarcerated, I had the opportunity to reflect on my life and what would have helped me succeed when reentering society. I realized there were major gaps in support, structure, and opportunity for people in similar situations. While incarcerated, I began writing the business plan for Garden 31. Over several months, I developed a vision centered on using land, food, education, and community as tools for growth and healing. After that, I started putting it into action through community-based work like school and garden programs, which became the foundation of what Garden 31 is today.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not always been a smooth road, though I have received a great amount of support and guidance from mentors, friends, and my community that has made it possible to overcome and see the fruits of our labor today. Some of the biggest challenges came from reentry after incarceration, including limited access to jobs, housing, and stability. Building an organization from the ground up also meant navigating funding challenges, gaining trust, and figuring out how to grow sustainably. There were also personal challenges, including learning how to lead, letting go of things that were holding me back, and adjusting my mindset over time. Overall, the process has required both external problem-solving and internal growth.

As you know, we’re big fans of Garden 31 Community Intiative. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Garden 31 is a nonprofit focused on regenerative agriculture, food access, and community development. The organization grows organic food, builds and maintains school and community gardens, and creates opportunities for people to connect with land, food, and each other. The organization is known for combining agriculture with community-based work and education. Instead of focusing only on food production, it also focuses on creating access, building relationships, and supporting long-term growth within communities.
What sets Garden 31 apart is that it is rooted in lived experience and designed to address real gaps in opportunity. The work is intentionally community-centered and focuses on creating environments where people can grow, not just physically but personally.
Brand-wise, the focus is on authenticity and impact. The most important part is the ability to bring people together and create meaningful experiences that shift how they see themselves and their future. Overall, Garden 31 is about access — access to food, education, opportunity, and a healthier environment.

Any big plans?
The long-term vision is to expand Garden 31 into a more structured model that includes workforce development and larger-scale impact. A major focus for the future is launching the G.R.O.W.E.R. Apprenticeship program, which is designed to provide hands-on training in agriculture, sustainability, and natural resource management, along with mentorship and career pathways. This program represents the direction the organization is moving toward. Long-term, the goal is to create larger, more centralized spaces that can support training, food production, and community development in a more comprehensive way. The focus moving forward is on scaling the impact and creating more structured opportunities for growth and long-term success.
