Rising Stars: Meet Lucas Smith of San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucas Smith

Hi Lucas, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After moving to San Diego in 2021, I actively engaged with the local art community, concentrating on abstract art. I completed a six-month mentorship, studying under local established artists, learning new skills, insights and techniques that helped to enhance my work. This culminated in my debut solo exhibition at Gallery 21 in Balboa Park this past April. During this time, I refined a distinctive color palette, and my work has since been featured in numerous galleries in Southern California, with pieces sold internationally and across the U.S. I have since established my studio base and launched my own website www.lucassmithart.com.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As an artist, balancing creative expression with the business side of art has been a challenge. Navigating marketing, networking, and maintaining an online presence requires a different skill set than creating. However, I’ve addressed these issues by allocating dedicated time for administrative tasks, allowing me to stay authentic to my vision while effectively managing exhibitions, commissions, and studio work.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in abstract art, particularly landscapes, seascapes, and exploring shapes and forms. I’m drawn to abstract expressionism and find inspiration in the ocean and nature, often taking time to collect and gather elements that influence my work. My color palette has evolved from bright neon tones to more muted, earthy shades, like burnt sienna, yellow ochre, and ultramarine blue. This shift was a challenge to myself, setting parameters to push my creativity while maintaining a sense of playfulness and enjoyment in the process.

What sets me apart is my unique approach to color and the emotional depth I infuse into each piece. I’m most proud of the progression in my work and the ability to adapt while staying true to my vision. By refining my palette and focusing on natural elements, I’ve created a signature style that is both grounded and expressive, which I believe resonates with collectors and viewers alike.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I love about San Diego is its connection to nature, especially the ocean. The rhythmic sounds of the waves bring me a sense of peace, and California has some of the best beaches to explore. I also enjoy the variety of hiking trails, which offer endless opportunities to experience the outdoors. The diversity of landscapes, from coastline to mountains, adds to the allure of this place. However, one thing I dislike is the traffic, which can be overwhelming and disrupt the otherwise laid-back vibe of the city.
