Rising Stars: Meet Margaret Effinger of Oceanside

Today we’d like to introduce you to Margaret Effinger.

Hi Margaret, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My path to becoming a therapist really began long before any formal training. Growing up with a parent who struggled with severe mental health challenges, I often found myself wishing for someone who could offer understanding, stability, and support—someone who could really hold space for what I was going through. That experience shaped my desire to become that person for others.

Before starting my private practice, I spent several years working in hospice. That work was deeply meaningful to me—it showed me how important it is to support people not only at the end of life, but throughout their emotional journey. It also reinforced how trauma and unresolved pain can carry through to the very end.

Today, I specialize in EMDR therapy, helping clients process and heal from childhood trauma. My goal is to create a safe, grounded space where people feel seen, supported, and empowered to move forward. I’m passionate about walking alongside clients through the difficult parts of life—so they don’t have to do it alone.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many therapists, I had to do a lot of my own healing work before I could fully show up for others. Navigating my own family dynamics, especially growing up with a parent who struggled with mental health, shaped me, but it also brought challenges that I had to face head-on.

Working in hospice was also both beautiful and emotionally intense. Holding space for grief day after day taught me so much, but it also required me to stay deeply grounded in my own self-care. Transitioning into private practice came with its own learning curve—building a practice, managing the business side of things, and continuing to grow as a clinician. But every step, even the hard ones, helped me become a better therapist and a more grounded human being.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m deeply passionate about trauma work, particularly in supporting individuals who have experienced profound and complex childhood trauma. My primary approach is EMDR therapy, which helps clients reprocess and release the weight of traumatic experiences so they no longer carry such a heavy presence in their daily lives.

I’m often described as a deeply compassionate and a grounded presence—someone people feel safe opening up to. My husband jokes that wherever we go, people who need a safe space somehow find me. I take that as a compliment and a calling.

One aspect of my work that sets me apart is my ability to hold space for deep, often painful trauma while still bringing my authentic self into the room. Even in the midst of heavy work, I believe in the healing power of connection—and that includes appropriate humor, warmth, and moments of relief. Clients often tell me that just showing up to a session brings a sense of ease and safety, even when we’re doing hard work together.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Although I may look young, I am a mom of three (ages 6, 4, 19 months)—and two of my children have special needs. My daughter, who is 4, has an extremely rare genetic condition and my son, 6, has autism. This part of my life is incredibly meaningful and shapes a lot of who I am. Outside of my clinical work, I’m navigating my children’s therapy appointments, advocating for them, and making sure they have the support they need to thrive. It’s a constant balancing act, but it’s also given me a deeper understanding of resilience and compassion, both in parenting and in my professional life.

On a more personal note, I love horseback riding, coffee, and the San Diego Padres. My older brother is in the celebrity spotlight, as he is a reporter for NFL Network (Tom Pelissero).
