Story & Lesson Highlights with Daniel Travers of Gaslamp Quarter

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Daniel Travers. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Daniel, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
For years, I stuck with the corporate grind. Over 15 years of stability, structure, and that reliable paycheck. Deep down, I always wanted to try running my own business, but the idea honestly scared me. Then the pandemic hit, and like a lot of people, I got laid off. It forced me to really look at what I wanted and finally take the leap. Now I’m figuring out what it means to be self-employed, building something of my own that I see as a long-term investment in myself, and doing the kind of work that actually excites me. It’s not always easy, but it feels right.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I started Drone Company San Diego to offer high-quality aerial content for businesses and organizations across different industries. It is a vertical brand of Redideo Studio, a creative agency in San Diego that I built around video production, web design, and digital strategy. Drone Company San Diego handles everything from marketing visuals and branded content to inspection services and general aerial coverage. The goal is to provide useful, visually engaging footage that actually supports what a business is trying to communicate or accomplish. With over 20 years of experience in digital media, I try to bring a thoughtful and creative approach to each project. Lately I have been working on a variety of local shoots and looking for new ways Drone Co SD can help businesses share their story, stay competitive, and work more efficiently.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I wanted to be a full-time fine artist. That was always the dream. Making things just to create, to express, to explore. The world did not tell me who I had to be, but through a lot of experience, I learned how hard it is to make a living doing only that. Over time, I found my way into commercial creative work, where I could still be artistic and build something more sustainable. That original version of me is still there, and I try to keep that creative spirit alive in everything I do.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
There’s always going to be ups and downs with everything, so try not to let the setbacks stop you. Just keep going, keep creating, and trust that you are figuring it out as you go. It does not have to be perfect. Just keep trying.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
I look at whether something actually solves a real problem or adds lasting value. Fads usually create a lot of noise but fade once the hype wears off. Real foundational shifts tend to stick around because they change how people think, work, or live. I also pay attention to how widely something gets adopted across different industries and whether it keeps evolving over time. If it keeps showing up and proving useful, it is probably not just a trend.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What will you regret not doing?
I will regret not trying something new just because it made me uncomfortable. That is usually where the growth happens. The unknown can feel intimidating, but staying in the same place out of fear holds you back. Some of the best things come from taking a risk, even if it feels uncertain at first. I would rather try and learn something than look back wondering what could have happened.
