Today we’d like to introduce you to Kieler Avery.
Kieler, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have been performing since I was 3 years old in community theater. I loved everything about being on stage. I decided to take up piano lessons so I could learn an instrument. I picked up the Ukelele when the director of a show I was in said if I learned, I could play it in the show.
One of my biggest inspiration is Tori Kelly, she played guitar and sang so I decided I wanted to learn the guitar so I could too.I started watching how she played songs on YouTube and learned by mimicking what she did. I discovered that I absolutely love writing my own music and started to include that and writing songs for the piano as well so now I write songs for both the guitar and piano. When I was awarded one of the “25 Most Remarkable Teens In San Diego” award for singing and songwriting, it gave me the boost of confidence I needed to put myself out there more. Now I just want to be heard and perform wherever I can. My EP is finished and will be released on December 3rd. I have released 2 singles so far that are available on all musical platforms now. I am planning to make a career in music.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Music comes very naturally to me and I can’t imagine doing anything else. I keep hearing “What is your backup plan”? Honestly, I don’t have one. If I did, it would be my excuse to give up and not pursue music because it is hard. And that is not an option for me. I have a great support team. My family is behind me and has been since the very beginning. The biggest struggle I have had is getting funding to produce future projects. My first EP has been completely funded by my family and myself by working gigs around town. It is extremely expensive. I am hoping that once I have something out there, it will get noticed and I can move forward. I really just want people to care and be able to relate to my songs.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am known mostly for my voice. My mom jokes that I sing more than I talk. I can always be heard singing something around the house or anywhere I go. One of the things I think sets me apart from others is that I write the music and lyrics as well as play the instruments and sing. I have been told that this is “unusual” for a 16 year old. To be a working musician at such an early age, but it’s what I do, and to me, it’s “normal”. I’m super proud to have been able to put out music while I’m still in high school and hope to have my career moving forward by the time I graduate.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I’m not sure it will help me be successful, but I think it’s important to be kind. If I have to be known for anything, I want people to be able to say I am kind. I think perseverance and determination is important in this industry and I definitely have that. I am also generally a positive person and can make the most of situations. If I can’t… I write a song about it and hope someone else can relate to it and learn from it. Then that turns the negative into a positive!
