Sugar Mamma Caramels all began as a gift of love. Since 2009, owner and confectioner, Nancy, had been gifting family and friends with her signature Sea Salt Caramels. With their encouragement , Nancy entered a candy contest at the 2012 San Diego County Fair and won 1st place! This lead to a local TV news spot where the reporters asked, “Where can we buy these most incredible caramels?” This was the spark that launched Sugar Mamma Caramels into a business.
From knocking on doors to word of mouth, Nancy has built Sugar Mamma Caramels to what it is today. You can find Sugar Mamma Caramels in several hotels and boutiques throughout San Diego from the Hotel Del Coronado to The Perfect Pineapple in Carmel Valley.
If you want to catch Nancy in person, she is a frequent vendor for San Diego Made and The Local Bazaar events.
All 17 flavors of Sugar Mamma Caramels are entirely handcrafted, all natural and made in small batches. Some of San Diego’s favorite caramel flavors include: Beer and Pretzels, Coffee ( both often collaborating with local San Diego beer and coffee), Meyer Lemon (grown organically on property) and Champagne Caramels! There is even a Vegan Caramel!
Nancy’s business has expanded into offering Marshmallows and S’mores Kits as well Nancy also offers custom orders for corporate gifting, weddings and parties.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road to building a woman-owned business is not easy, but so rewarding! Obtaining permits, experimenting with recipes, and gaining a foothold in a competitive industry is challenging.

I have found that women, supporting women in business to be very powerful and motivating! I started this journey as a shy, quiet, former maternal health care provider, to someone who can walk into a room and be able to talk to everybody!
what should we know about Sugar Mamma Caramels? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I work 7 days a week, often 8-12 hours a day on my business. I own a CFO (Cottage Food Operation). That means I have a home based Department of Health permitted kitchen. I specialize in handcrafted, all-natural caramels and marshmallows.
I am best known for my award-winning Sea Salt Caramels and my unprecedented 17 unique flavors! I am super proud of the fact that I built this business entirely on my own, from creating my products, marketing, packaging, advertising, hand cutting and wrapping 1000’s of caramels each week.
What sets me apart is my use of the highest quality ingredients, small batch quality control and love goes into every bite of caramel!
