Daily Inspiration: Meet Phillip Hernandez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Phillip Hernandez.

Phillip Hernandez

Hi Phillip, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I’m Filipino-American, originally hailing from the East Coast, and raised in the bustling DMV area. My life took an unexpected turn during my tenure at a prestigious multilateral organization in Washington, D.C. It was there that I rekindled an old friendship with a fellow creative, an old high school friend. Both of us were yearning for creative outlets that would provide respite from the monotony of our daily suits-and-ties routines.

This yearning gave birth to a remarkable photography project, one that drew its inspiration from the enigmatic worlds of film noir and nouvelle vague. You can read about it in detail in this feature by The Washington Post: [Insert Link]

We named this project “OCULOIRE,” and it served as the foundational steppingstone for my evolving creative journey and distinctive artistic style. As time marched forward, my wife and I made the life-changing decision to relocate to San Diego in 2020. This move was motivated by a desire to be closer to the coastline, which would not only provide me with the perfect canvas for my artistic pursuits but also an opportunity to harmonize my creative style with another deep passion of mine – surfing.

Before our move, surfing was merely a conversation starter, a way to casually connect with my landlocked friends and colleagues. However, beneath the surface, it had grown into an obsession. I yearned for others to feel the exhilaration and serenity I experienced when plunging into the waves. And as a photographer, I realized that I held the power to bring this narrative to life through my lens.

Chasing surf photography has become the embodiment of several of my passions converging into a seamless tapestry, revealing not only my unique journey but also my creative evolution.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Aside from the constant challenge of predicting the surf conditions and aligning my schedule, my biggest struggle has always been finding the right time to fully commit to my passion for photography. Before I made the move to San Diego, it never seemed like the perfect moment to take the leap. I kept a remote job to ensure financial stability, which allowed me to support my lifestyle while pursuing photography on the side.

What has definitely helped keep things smooth are the connections I’ve made with fellow artists, photographers, and creative individuals here in San Diego. I feel like I have a very strong network and community that I wasn’t able to achieve in my hometown. It helps to have several surf crews that I can bounce around to different breaks with and the @beersandcameras community for when I want to talk shop and get new ideas.

My journey in San Diego has taught me that timing isn’t just about waiting for the perfect moment; it’s about seizing the opportunities that come your way. While I’m not a full-time photographer yet, I’ve learned that life has a way of aligning itself when you embrace new experiences and connect with like-minded people. It’s a journey of growth and discovery, one photograph at a time.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My primary focus is on in-water surf photography, a genre that requires not only technical skill but also a deep understanding of the sport and the ocean. I aim to freeze the exhilarating moments when surfers connect with the waves, the spray of saltwater, and the thrill of being out there. My images often showcase the harmony between the natural elements and the surfers, creating compositions that convey the essence of surfing.

My collaborators, friends, and clients know me for my ability to capture the unfiltered emotions that come with riding the waves. My photography is not just about documenting surfers in action; it’s about telling their stories, reflecting their dedication, and highlighting the sheer joy they experience in the ocean.

What I’m most proud of in my surf photography journey is the ability to share the passion and beauty of surfing with a broader audience. It’s immensely gratifying to see the reactions of people who may have never experienced the thrill of being in the ocean but can connect with it through my photographs. Additionally, I take pride in the collaborative projects and exhibitions that my work has been a part of, helping to elevate the art of surf photography.

What sets my work apart is not just technical prowess but a deep personal connection to the sport. As a surfer myself, I have an intimate understanding of the dynamics of the ocean and the challenges that surfers face. This insider’s perspective allows me to anticipate and capture those extraordinary moments that might elude others.

Moreover, my work often combines elements of my earlier creative influences, such as the film noir and nouvelle vague styles, giving my surf photography a distinctive and artistic edge. I’m not just documenting surfers; I’m telling a visual story that resonates on multiple levels.

What are your plans for the future?
Looking ahead, my aspirations in the world of surf photography extend beyond the lens. I’m excited to explore new avenues for sharing my passion and expertise with a broader audience. One of the significant steps I’ve taken in this direction is the creation of my YouTube channel to feature more long-format video work.

On my YouTube channel, I aim to offer viewers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world of surf and surf travel photography. It’s a platform where I can share tips and tricks for capturing the perfect shot, discuss the equipment I use, feature other surfers and surf photographers, and narrate the stories behind some of my work. The channel serves as a hub for surf enthusiasts, photography enthusiasts, and those who are simply curious about the art form.

I’m also always actively exploring opportunities for sponsorships and collaborations. While I’ve done brand work for fringe-related surf brands, I’m looking to work more directly within the surf industry.
