Life and Work with Jenny Baek

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Baek.

So, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Since I was young as a teenager, I’ve always enjoyed to take pictures and have my pictures taken. So, I was always asking people around me to take a picture of me. The more I asked them, the more they got annoyed since they were not interested in photography as much as I am. One day, my sister, the biggest victim, said “Jenny, if you are really serious about what you love and your passion in photography/modeling, then you should look for professional talented photographers, who have the same passion, and who can take a great photo with a nice camera. I am not professional, and also I can’t get you the best picture with this small phone camera.”

She was totally right, and since then, I started to look for professional photographers and have been working with a lot of talents for two years now.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As we all know, nothing can be easy in life, and so is modeling. Fashion Photography/modeling industry is super competitive and they do not take every single one. It’s been a struggle for me too since I am petite (5’3) and the majority of model agencies still look for models who are tall enough who have more various options including runways and fashion show. Still, I wanted to try my best so I was applying for agencies and also been rejecting lots of time.

However, currently my interest is modeling only in the form of photography, and when it comes to photography, the height does not really matter. So, I would never want to make me feel upset about my height.

Also, another challenge I’ve been fighting with is to compare myself to other models.
Since there are tons of talented amazing models out there in the industry around the world, I used to compare myself to them and undervalued myself. But later, I realized that every single model has its own unique style so I do not ever need to feel depressed about myself, but only try to do my best in my own way.

No one is perfect, also there is no right or wrong standard in modeling especially creating art in photography. So, young women! If you are passionate about modeling, just try not to compare but only make the best version of yourself!

Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I would like to call myself an artist or a storyteller rather than a model. As an artist, I’ve been trying to create a creative art using photography, and as a storyteller, I am trying to tell the beautiful stories in the form of photography. The story usually comes out of the imaginary character I am supposed to be in the pictures, and the character is made by the outfit in the set, and the poses are coming out from her personality and feelings/emotions.

Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
I am grateful to have my family who’ve been supporting my decision all the time in my life.
Even though many people around me were worried about me starting this modeling hobby in a serious manner, that support from family and close friends made me want to not give up on what I am seriously passionate about. The support from beloved is very important especially when you are exposed to the environment where you need to fight yourself every day in terms of creativity, your possibility, and your talent. Their genuine support and love have kept reminding me who I am and who I want to be in my life. And I know it will be the biggest motivation and energy in my modeling life.
