Today we’d like to introduce you to Camille Waters.
Hi Camille, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
So, after I gave birth to my daughter, I was looking for a creative outlet. A way to help me find me again. I’ve always loved comedy movies and stand-up, so I figured I’d check out an open mic. So, I went to my first open mic one week and decided to sign up the following week. From that first 5 minutes, I was hooked. The rush of being on stage, the crowd laughing right along with me it was amazing. That was 7 months ago and it’s just been up from there.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t necessary been a smooth road. Especially starting out I was still on a pretty strict pump schedule. I would go to open mics that didn’t end until like 11/12 come home to a baby who still wasn’t sleeping through the night and then have to pump at 5:30 in the morning. I was definitely a new level of tired, but it was a good tired a motivational tired
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
So, there are not a ton of women in comedy which automatically gives me a different perspective on things. There are also not a lot of black, mom, military spouses over the age of 30 in the San Diego scene, so I use my jokes to kind of bring people into my world. I love that I can embrace my differences and show people who on paper would think we have nothing in common that we actually have a lot in common because we are all just people on this planet doing our best. I like using my time to create a bond with the audience so after my set you walk away with laughs but also maybe a new friend
We’d love to hear about what you think about risk-taking.
I truly believe risks are some of the most important parts of a good life. Staying in your comfort zone is easy, but you can’t grow or develop without trying something new. I’m definitely a risk-taker and I know the best things in my life have come from thing that absolutely terrified me.
